I knew that they had to have controlled the market last year, but the last six years? That's impressive, I wonder what market share the other anime companies manage to get? I bet it's ADV second and then Geneon, or at least I think that how the top three would round out. |

Hmm, I'd say Viz would have to come pretty close as well, Bandai too. Well, it's no surprise for right now, but things might change this year, Viz is getting more of the bigger titles lately, so we could see a shift by the end of the year.

Sony and Viz occupy the top five with the rest that you mentioned. For the former I'd guess it's the various movies that they've released and continue to sell, and Viz... well, gee, I hope that I don't need to explain their success. Personally those numbers don't match up with my interests, considering that outside of Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid, I'm not interested in any FUNi licenses, and the only one that I would've gone for would've been Mushishi had Del Rey not picked up the manga. But that is a huge difference in any case with FUNimation and ADV Films, the others all seem relatively in range with each consecutive one. Also in that link to TZF, it seems as though they have their eyes on One Piece, which makes  a bit.

Everyone knows how I feel towards Funimation.. and for the sake of the children I will keep it to myself. But with every release, I slowly find myself speaking a different tone towards the Texan based company.
Main point is, it makes sense why Funimation would have that market I will lay it down for four reasons. 1. Funimation tends to get the more impressive or fan worthy Licenses, meaning whether they do good or bad, they will have that following and will definitely make sales. 2. Because of reason number one Networks like Turner Broadcasting and others will buy those and broadcast them on their highly rated blocks. I.E adult swim and Toonami. 3. Funimation was smart in making the Funimation Channel, which to the poor Anime Otaku who just happens to come across a newer HDTV, they will be able to see Anime 24/7 giving Funimation the lead. 4. Because of all three stated above, these can boost Dvd sales, because Funimation licenses tends to appeal to the broad audiences, more importantly, the Kiddies. Need I say it? Dragon Ball Z. It can be said that Funimation deserves props for making Anime widely accessible to the Anime Community. Along with hits like Full Metal Alchemist, Gunslinger Girls, and Hare+Guu (Dubbed by BangZoom). It can be said that this Otaku's blatant Animosity towards Funimation is finding no reason to exist. Although Funimation isn't my favorite company by far( And before we start Neither is BangZoom, and NO, I will not say, because I really like my job), with titles like the ones I mentioned, plus the titles we see on the way. I can only look to this company with hope, because at the end of the day, facts do not lie. Funimation is Number One. |

Well, having spoken with some of them as a "rabid" fan, I can say this...
they listen. I never got a sense of it being a company about the $ (which, let's face it... it has to be), but more that they were a bunch of folks who loved anime, and had a job to do. You can even see it in how they promote themselves at cons. I don't know, I guess in a word, I got a lot of "passion" from them that I just wasn't originally expecting to find. Apparently, it's paying off

Hare+Guu was licensed by AN Entertainment. The only connection is that FUNimation has been distributing for them lately (and they are doing something similar with Tokyopop's licenses AFAIR )

So ADV took a plunge from last year it seems. Going from 20+% to 12+%. Looking through the list it seems Sony has come in and taken a lot of the market share from them.
I'm fairly new to the industry side of anime. What did Sony release this year that had such a impact on its share of the industry? |

Yes. I hope that with megaselling titles like Bleach, Naruto and Deathnote, Viz can show Funimation who's boss again. |

But the announcement said that FUNimation compiled the data to get to this result and not Nielsen. I'd be more satisfied if an independent company had compiled the data to come to that conclusion.
Then is where they are taking their data from really applicable for anime fans with download to buy, internet buying, buying second hand from rental sites, ebay, etc.? Not to mention that some stores only stock certain types of titles (A-list, ie titles that will definitely sell) in the first place

Sorry, I'm not tracking. The entire series has been completely aired on Cartoon Network and all of the individual DVDs including the movie have been released. Unless you are talking about the box sets and the potential extras...
