There's a big batch of Japanese rock bands touring the US on their way to the South By Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, TX, this March. 7 bands travelling to 8 different cities (mostly on the coasts, plus Austin and Chicago). Of the two bands who have songs on the tour's MySpace page, the Emeralds sound amazing, and the other band (whose name is in Japanese so I can't read it) are absolutely insane. Yowza!
Check out more info on the tour's MySpazz page here: http://www.myspace.com/japannite |

looks like they added some more songs since you posted this. I was looking at the SXSW bands list and they had a lot more listed than on this tour. "Tokyo East End Rockers" and "Ride Bent" are from Asakusa Jinta. They sound very interesting kind of like ska with accordians. The other songs aren't playing for me.

Well, yeah, there are literally hundreds of bands that play SXSW every year, it's just that these bands are touring other places together before they head down there. Try the page again some time....MySpace has a habit of not always letting you listen to all 4 songs on someone's page at once. |

ah the emeralds. I listened to them before but didn't think they were that special. They also added 2 songs from The 50Kaitenz, they're decent. I think more people would appreciate this if they made an effort to play at non-21+ venues. |

I got a big fat pack of samplers from the Japan Nite people to check out all the bands in order to write an article previewing the tour. I've listened to 5 bands so far, and it's all pretty great. I'm currently listening to Hy, and man, if these guys aren't making anime closing themes, they REALLY need to be....this record is packed with soaring ballads. Good stuff!
I'd say the Emeralds is probably my favorite of the ones I've heard so far, but a couple of the bands only sent one-song singles, so those don't really make much of an impression on one listen. |

Given that the show in Seattle features only three of the bands, HY, The 50Kattenz and Asakusa Jinta, I've booked a vacation in San Francisco. There is no way I'm going to pass on a chance to see GO!GO!7188. I own 6 out of their 8 or 9 albums including one which has a DVD of a couple of songs from a show they did in an open amphitheatre in the pouring rain (plus an accompanying troupe of 50-60 year old cheerleaders on one tune). The Emeralds were the openers at the show in Seattle last year. Got all the band members to sign their CD. They're pretty good but got steamrollered by the next two bands on the bill: Stance Punks and Ellegarden.
