seems like lots of manga writers are stealing their ideas these days.

why can't they simply reference the original material instead of outright ripping it off?

You'd think that all the other manga-ka would have learned from the others who got busted. I've got no sympathy for 'em.

ok i don't understand this, she plagiarized a fashion spread? i could understand if she ripped off another mangakai or something, but they seem to be making a big deal out of nothing.

It may be just a fashion spread, but it's plagiarism nonetheless, since apparently she never had a permission to use the images. Breach of copyright.

What about the arthur of Slam Dunk! who used official NBA photos for his work?? Why isn't he in trouble? Seems like some double-standard going on.

"Referencing" fashion spreads isn't exactly uncommon: it happens all the time in the American comic industry. It sounds like they're just accusing one artist to set an example for the countless rest.

I think probably one reason why this is causing a stir is because the fashion company has the rights not only to the photographs the artist referenced but to the fashions themselves. The artist would need to get permission to use these fashions, and either pay the company a fee or (much more likely) put the company's name all over the place as a sort of "in kind" advertisement.
Of course, I haven't seen the pages in question....anybody got a link? |

Breach of copyright and she's endagering Cookie that they might get sued as well. Now maybe if she had gotten permission from them that might be another story, but it's too late now.

this just further reinforces the fact that you don't have to have an ounce of intelligence to get your series published.

God, this is so stupid. It could've been so easily avoided just by using some common sense.

Wow. What a blantant rip-off, too...
Making up your own fashions aren't *that* hard, even I've done it. She should've just used it as inspiration and done her own original outfit. |

Yet another manga-ka falls prey to the "ends justify the means" mode of thinking. It's a sad sight to see, but at the same time, perhaps she'll learn a lesson or two about doing her own work rather than trying to cut corners.
