Probably because the characters didn't act much like themselves. If you read the manga then watch castle of cogliostro you will see the differences.

Well if you go read the manga and then watch Pioneer's TV series DVDs, even on the Sub none of the characters act the way they do in the manga either (I don't know about Goemon though, I'm not that far in the manga).

For example:

Lupin: Dosen't leave letters when he goes to steal things and dosen't rape everybody. In the dub, he also has some kind of knowledge of the future, since he makes jokes about Shaq and Avril Lavigne. Wink

Jigen: Actually has a mind of his own when it comes to helping Lupin.

Fujiko: More of Lupin's friend than his sorta-enemy.

Zenigata: Actually a hip cool guy in the manga.

Of course, that's just the TV series. I haven't seen any of the OVAs or specials or anything, but supposedly the new Lupin movie Pioneer just released is very close to the manga.

Bah, it is Green Jacket Lupin, That means they act differantly because much of the green jacket lupin's are directed by Miyazaki.
Besides, the second series dub shown in the US, (where lupin wears a red jacket), is actually a bit of a butchering to bring the jokes up to date. I like it though, most who enjoy lupin do, because it was made to fit the show.
On Castle of Cagliostro itself, I have never heard of anyone disliking it before. Lupin is still Lupin. He isn't always about money (not that it is ever bad), and has given it up willingly for a. his ego, b. to impress a woman. B happens in Castle of Cagliostro. Also, it is hard to say because only about 10% of lupin's have been translated, but Castle of Cagliostro sticks with the anime chracterization. They tried a darker version and a more comedic version of Lupin, people liked Castle of Cagliostro's lupin the best.

Monkey Punch didn't like how the film protrayed his characters. I agree, there is an obvious shift in personality, especially with Lupin. I, personally, think it's a good film; just not necessarily a good Lupin film.

Also, the color of the jacket means little, except in reference to which of the two TV series you're watching. In the first one (circa '71, IIRC) they colored the jacket green. The second one (circa '77, IIRC), which is what Pioneer is releasing, has it colored red. Neither is technically wrong, as the manga was black and white. I definitely would have to say that the first series is the better of the two as it's much, much closer to the manga, only toned down a little to make it broadcastable.

Someone on the Lupin ML said that Miyazaki claimed he was presenting an older and more mature Lupin. Anyway, I still enjoy it in its own right, but I hate how it's used as the measuring stick for all Lupin anime.
