Witch Watch is great and I'm glad to see it finally animated. It's like if Roman from Sket Dance got her own anime and her gimmick was magic instead of shoujo manga. Ojamajo Doremi is great but unfortunately I think the 4Kids dub killed any chance of it catching on here. On the other hand Mahou Tsukai Precure is probably one of my least favorite Precures. Majo no Tabitabi was one of my favorites in 2020.
I was aware of western franchises like Bewitched being super huge in Japan and influencing a lot of Japanese media throughout history. I think it's mostly Harry Potter influencing things since the 90s these days with even creators from series like Mashle and Reign of the Seven Spellblades being tapped to promote the Hogwarts Legacy game in Japan when it came out. That's more about magic schools in general than specifically witches though. I'm curious how many younger Japanese creators are aware of Bewitched and have watched it. |

Not a single mention of Umineko. I know the anime adaptation is just a full on meme at this point, but still, absolutely criminal

I remember a while ago, an opinion that was going around was that Cardcaptor Sakura was a witch more than she was a magical girl. Still feels a bit controversial to say even though I don't know witch way I fall.

I loved Witch Craft Works and Maria the Virgin Witch, Flying Witch was a good time as well, and someday I need to finish the back half of Little Witch Academia.
As it lacks one of its own, I'm gonna throw my floppy witch hat into the ring for Belladonna of Sadness. The hat game in Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches' OP was enough to get me aboard for its full run, despite their lack in the show itself. :continues waiting for Witch Hat Atelier's adaptation: |

No mention of Sugar Sugar Rune? I actually started watching it when it received a Neutral Spanish dub last year, I have almost 20 episodes left. It's kind of weird since I think it's often classified as a Magical Girl show, but like it's mention, the line between witch and Magical Girl is not very clear

I thought Maebashi Witches had some really solid writing in its second and third episodes, tackling a sensitive but important topic (fatphobia) with quite a bit more grace and thoughtfulness than just about any other anime I can think of.
The series is written by Erika Yoshida, who also wrote Artiswitch, another series about witches granting wishes. It addressed many contemporary and heavy subjects with quite a bit of flair. Very aesthetic too, lots of fashion and music. It's super short and free on Youtube too! |

Calling Witch Craft Works cowardly for not going yuri is strange. This isn't a situation with Suzume where a big budget theatrical film needs to attract a large mainstream romantic drama/comedy audience to cover is production and marketing expenses. Instead, this is the manga industry where yuri has been around since at least the 1970s and the name for the genre had been around since the 1990s. When Witch Craft Works came out, two magazines entirely devoted to yuri had been around several years. Yes, Witchcraft Works was seinen but that had also long been depicting yuri relationships: Lyrical Nanoha several years old by that point. Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero came along not long after. (Regardless of how modern western fans view them, they were most definitely aimed at the seinen demo in Japan and would not have been made otherwise, just as the market for Gushing Over Magical Girls was never the Pretty Cure crowd). Witch Craft Works's own magazine, Good Afternoon, had been publishing Teppu since 2008.
Instead, it was a creative decision. Had Honoka remained a girl, it doesn't run 12 years and get an anime adaptation. A lot of the story beats, especially the subversive comedic ones, just work better with "huge stacked powerful girlfriend with small boyfriend who can't use magic or fight." Example: Honoka has real issues with using physical violence against the main foes that threaten him, his mother and little sister and friends. If Honoka is female, most of the fanbase would hate her over this. Since Honoka is a guy it is easy: good guys are raised never to hit girls. Also, "powerless guy surrounded by beautiful, powerful girls" is an inherently entertaining dynamic that's been used elsewhere, especially Haruhi Suzumiya, plus to somewhat lesser/different extents Re:Zero, Infinite Stratos, Claymore, even the American cartoon Kim Possible etc. Let Honoka remain a girl and you have to endlessly explain "why is the daughter of a witch and older sister of a witch so useless again and why is she even in the show?" As most witch fiction doesn't depict male witches and even in the small percentage where they do technically exist, they are few in number and don't do much, in this case "he is a guy" answers itself. |

Which witch would a witch have watched when Witch Watch wasn't watchable?
Sorry, sorry. Anyway.... Every couple of months or so, I still find myself vainly rummaging around the usual retailers hoping to find some news of a blu-ray release for Little Witch Academia. Not only is it one of my favorite witch shows (*the* favorite, I'd bet) it's also one of my favorite anime series, ever. I will never not be upset about this. EDIT: Ooooh, and if we're drawing a distinction between witch anime and anime witches, for the latter category I've gotta say, my favorite's gonna hafta be the Witch of the Wastes, from Howl's Moving Castle. I mean, just look at her. Not only does she have a fantastic character design (multiple character designs, really), she's also a ton of fun to watch on-screen, and the way she's animated... incredible. Favorite anime witches? Ojamajo Doremi, obviously. I've been a fan for over 20 years.

I like that the first post here is "No Tweeny Witches!?!" since it is the first thing I thought of when I saw the title of the article.
