It was tolerable while it lasted, good thing it's incredibly easy to import to Anilist

Uh, why are some users on ANN panicking/alarmed over this, I had MAL since Jan 2010, and well beside some issues (other then the MAL forum), I had no other problem. I'll still continue to use it alongside Anilist (which I created in Jan 2023).

As the things cannot gone even worse considering MAL was already became quite overbloated with it's UX and ad space in recent years. Seems like it's time to finally saying goodbyes.

Because MAL is getting sold to a super [poop]y AI/Blockchain/Crypto company that says they expect to make a ton of money on this - and there is no way to do that other than turn MAL to complete [poop].

If you have an adblocker for your browser (I would recommend downloading Ublock from your browser app store since that one is excellent), then that should solve your ad slowing down on your browser.

I personally have one - but considering how browsers (especially Chrome, because honestly screw Google and it's love to giving a sticks in a wheel trying to fight against the bloatware) love to fight with adblocks, it's not like a perfect solution for everyone - also while it get rid of banners, it never fixes the massive empty space, multiple columns of pushed articles space (do we even need that) on every single page and overall clunkiness.

But MAL honestly became a mess for a while since every single time when they trying to push something and then stumble all over again - and not like it's been a very secure with how much times it been hacked either.

Well that's...disappointing. I don't really have high hopes for this venture, and could easily see the new owners simply mining whatever useful data the site has and then letting it rot in obscurity.

ublock origin works fine to remove most of that space on firefox. everything rescales . It hasn't been a mess at all. It also hasn't been hacked since like 2018

Glad I've been using Anilist for a while now, excellent site! Though they do lack listings quite as deep as MAL, especially for more obscure shows. I bet if folks worked together though, that could be fixed very easily with some time.

"Lain incident" where some hacker got the complete access to the site database happened less than two years ago in May 2023, so that's not really true.

So, "mobile-focused" site redesign that makes it stop looking like a functional website incoming within a year, then. As always happens.

I don't actually use the Anilist site that often, but I love their API. Practically anything you can imagine querying, you can query, from "list the most popular anime and manga that debuted between these two dates" to "list scores for each anime in this list of IDs" to "list all voice actors in this anime and all their performances in any anime". And no bandwidth wasted on any info you don't need. It's been my first experience using GraphQL, and it made a very good first impression.
