The very first scene, I was looking at the train interior and thinking, that's got some nice detail. Then the anime broke into a pretty score punctuated by a violin solo and showed a gorgeous shot of some long stairs leading up to a shrine while sunlight broke through the surrounding trees, and I thought this could be one of those anime I stick with just because I like watching the art go by while listening to the music. And those qualities stayed high throughout.
But the writing is pretty lazy. The MC stumbled on the three sisters in their underwear and then later took three consecutive lucky lecher pratfalls in a row, straddling all three women while screaming that it was a misunderstanding. I'm not prudish, but that's pretty heavy trope reliance. All four characters are pretty firmly established stereotypes too. The dense clod with no game who just wants to study. The ditz, the tsundere, and the pervy adolescent. So I'm kind of getting mixed feelings here. The anime is on a pretty clear rinse and repeat cycle without much narrative ambition, and it's not like the shrine setting is all that unusual either. The one writing aspect that was sort of distinct - the MC's anger at the gods and the conflict it caused - pretty much got resolved by the end of the episode in a deus ex machina ending. The anime opening made it seem like they were going for a Quintessential Quintuplets kind of set up with a mystery wedding at the end, but the anime seemed to favor one sister in particular right out of the gate. But then, Quintessential Quintuplets did too, and it took a left turn later. I guess my unenlightened take is, the anime is pretty to look at and listen to and doesn't seem malicious in its fan service, and people who miss the hodge podge of harem comedies this one is borrowing from and are just looking for something to relax to might find a place to rest their brain here. |

Its...not great. A show like this needs humor and/or heart. At least one of them, if not both. But I didn't find it particularly funny, and I don't really like the characters so its definitely not in a good place.
Currently, it very much benefits from the early season lack of competition. I watch on my lunchbreak, so 5ish shows per season. The dearth of options means currently its on the watchlist, but my expectation is that I'll drop it pretty quickly when anything marginally entertaining can take its place. |

Eh, I think this is a drop for me. There is indeed not really anything of note that keeps you watching besides some good looking art. The cliches are in full force and the characters are very much not anything unique/special either. The mc is unique in that he is an asshole who can not respect others' choices in regards to their believes I suppose. I am sure that he will improve but that just makes him as bland as the others. Finally, there was nothing that made me giggle so you end up with a nothing burger in a crowded season.

Looks like I'll be the sole watcher of this, but then again, I'm a sucker for any show that has cute girls in it and I will fully admit that that's usually enough to keep my interest.

I used to think that way but we have several shows with cute girls every season now so I have grown to be a bit more critical. There is the third season of Love Live Superstar for example.

Not sure why this is relevant, or even if it is, but a Sunday or three ago ago I had a bad reaction to the Shingles Vaccine. Aches, shivers, fatigue, the whole bit. Didn't even know that was a thing, but apparently it happens sometimes. Spent the whole day bundled up on the couch watching Studio Apartment, Good Lighting, Angel Included and A Nobody's Way up to an Exploration Hero. I hadn't disliked them, but I'd dropped them an episode or two in because I thought they were kinda just there.
And they were perfect. I don't know if I'm saying that anime that are basically pleasant and don't really push any boundaries have their time and place, or if people's taste change given their circumstances or mood, but what I can't say is that I won't be watching this anime at some point. |

Oh for sure your mood can influence what you find enjoyable. For the purposes of the highly technical discussion to follow, I will use the terms "mood" and "phase." Mood is how you feel on a given day. In Edjwald's example above, he was feeling physically out of sorts and so he found some anime that was perfect given his mood. Phase is a mood extended over a period of time. For example, I am currently going through a phase where I can't really tolerate an anime that isn't evoking a fairly strong reaction of some sort. I've watched a number of s.o.l. titles in the past... I'm not sure I could handle one these days unless there was some sort of compelling feature to it. If I'm watching a comedy, it has to be pretty funny (to me). I'm definitely biased toward strong narrative engines these days. Or be really into a cast of characters. I've been going through the Patlabor franchise recently and for me that show is all about the interaction of the wacky band of misfits in Section 2, Division 2.

@Blood- The funny thing about watching Patlabor for me is that four of the voice actors that are in it also played characters in Maison Ikkoku and I keep picturing the MI characters in the situations of the Patlabor characters they voiced. Three of the four were also in Urusei Yatsura together, but I don't find myself thinking of them as Patlabor characters as often as I did for the Maison Ikkoku characters.

People are kind of forced to be more critical when it comes to anime given the sheer quantity of them now. Ten years ago you could get away with being merely okay since seasons were reasonably well balanced with how many shows there were. These days almost every season is crammed and trying to see most on offer is not doable for the average person.
Who knows though, I watched the second season of The Café Terrace in one day recently for who knows what reason so maybe this is another one of those binge shows. |

@ Beltane70 - won't be an issue with me because I listen to the subs.
@ smurky turkey - quantity is certainly a factor, but with me it was more of a cumulative effect. After years and years of not being particularly discriminating, I just lost patience with mediocrity. I've put in my time, man. Now, either grab me or die. |

Badly directed with no animation budget to speak of. From what little I saw of the manga and its production values, this series would have deserved much better than this.
