Great review. I really enjoyed reading about your opinion regarding the differences of each version of FSN. I also felt the H scenes were unnecessary when it came to the main narrative, but I can understand the intimacy angle and how people would prefer that they kept those scenes in.

Regarding the "Altria" thing, some fans speculate this is due to an old mistake made when they didn't have access to good English translations, and that has left them stuck with the "incorrect" name for the sake of their merchandising contracts.

If you've never played this visual novel before, the remastered release is a no-hassle way to jump right in.
However, as someone who's played fan patches that combined features from multiple releases, this new version doesn't seem to be worth the replay. Updated graphics and new translation isn't quite enough to offset the years of love that fan projects poured into creating the ultimate FSN experience. |

Irregardless of text quality, I still think the H scenes fitted more than the sanitized alternative.
Also, while other routes are still functional without them, the HF route, imho, loses a part of it's narrative without them. spoiler[Sakura's thoughts about sex, intimacy and purity are an important part of her character and 'vanilla' blood drinking makes a poor substitute] |

this was my 1st time playing anything from the fate franchise and one of the few type moon VNs I've played, playing this immediately after finishing the tsukihime remake and i became obsessed with both...
My favorite route most of all was Unlimited Blade Works, out of all of em it was the only one that gave me a good feeling at the end for both endings...loved it so much im tempted to blind buy the blu ray anime if it ever goes on sale... 190 is too steep atm |

Something important I need to know. Is Zero l
faithful as a prequel? I remember the visual novel describes Shirou and Kiritsugu as happy men sometimes but I don't recall if the Light novel was just like the anime. Heard rumors Urobuchi had regrets about Kiritsugu's characterization in the Light novel so the Zero anime changed parts which makes Shirou's recalls of the man questionable |

So how many spin-offs and/or pre/sequals are there? I'm really lost when it comes to the Fate series. I hadn't have this much confusion over a series since Touhou Project and it's kind of a deal breaker.
I might get this on a Steam sale but my gaming schedule is booked with FFXIV right now and Zelda at the end of the month. October outlook not so good looking either with Y's X and my yearly Halloween game. |

Zero uses information from Fate/hollow ataraxia, the sequel to f/sn. There are hints about Kiritsugu in the original vn, but it gets expanded in the sequel |

Glad to see such a detailed review for this! It absolutely joins the lineup of games we never thought would ever get localized, and yeah completely agree with many of the points. Sex scenes completely unnecessary and tonally bizarre, big shame we're stuck with the Altria translation due to old Japanese merchandizing mandates, and I wish fan Fate fans especially the new young ones and the extreme old heads, would chill out on people who watched Fate/Zero first lol. Perfectly fine/great starting point, but it's rad the original VN is now available for all as well.

I played the visual novel but I heard the Zero anime stayed too far from the light novel so there were something inconsistence when Shirou talks about Kiritsugu like he was a cheerful man, even more than he as a kid. |

Fate Zero is almost entirely set during the previous Grail War with only a few scenes that take place after he saves Shirou so I wouldn’t say that any differences between how Shirou describes Kiritsugu’s personality and how he acts during Zero would be an inconsistency because Shirou didn’t know Kiritsugu during it. Haven't gotten far in the visual novel yet, but in the anime Saber mentions to Shirou that from how he described Kiritsugu, that she was surprised as it's not how she remembered him so I don't think it's an inconsistency.

Kiritsugu breaks after the events of Zero. Shirou knew nothing of his past and previous behaviour. I'd say the problem is more with the anime straying from LN's characterization to make Kiritsugu seem as a 'cool badass', while he's meant to be seen as pathetic the more the reader finds out about him in the light novel |

Next I want to see a review from a staff member who has seen the anime shows, generally like them not a big fan, and go read the VN.

As others have mentioned, the Kiritsugu from Zero is a completely different person from the Kiritsugu Shirou knew. spoiler[Saber in Fate] and spoiler[Kirei in Heaven's Feel] go into much more detail about what Kiritsugu used to be like. The biggest discrepancy between the Zero anime and the LNs that I can recall is young Rin's misadventure searching for a kldnapped classmate. The anime gave us a successful, uplifting, happy ending to that episode, whereas in the LNs Rin learned a very harsh lesson about the moonlit world and was lucky to escape with her life (her friend, needless to say, was not so fortunate). (And on that subject, if there' s any reason not to start with Zero rather than the VN, it's that it spoils very important details on the identity of the third route's heroine. That said--and I've made this point before--the calling card of the VN is that it takes full advantage of the forced route order to pour in layer upon layer upon layer of foreshadowing in the first two routes, to the point where a full replay is almost as rewarding as the first playthrough, due to all the new things you'll spot. So it's not that big a deal. Certainly less of a problem than all the dangling loose ends in the single-route anime adaptations.) |
