Y'know, I've heard of season of the witch before, but this must be the season of the magical girl, because this is two magical girl anime in a row that I've liked, and I liked this one more than the first one.
Basically, I just thought this one was a lot of fun. I liked that the characters were extreme types but not caricatures. The blonde Valkyrie of a magical girl was a bit of the hot shot, rebellious type, but she wasn’t unreasonable and screaming at every opportunity. The new hire was the not atypical industrious and serious glasses wearing type, but she wasn’t obsessive to the point of being clueless or hysterical. Look at the main characters of Dan Da Dan by way of reference. I also liked the strange blend of magic and technology that seemed to be taking place. I guess this kaii stuff they kept talking about is like the mana or Qi in the Korean and Chinese web novels I sometimes read? The first fight scene was a lot more fun than the second, which mostly seemed to involve keyboarding skills, but the weird working class approach to magical girls where they were arguing about billing and insurance and stuff with the management types made up for it. These aren’t typical magical girls so much as ghost busters with a different fashion sense, and I got into it.. |

Now that was a lot of fun. I am a sucker for shows that tinker a bit with well known genres/subjects to give them a unique spin and commercialised magical girls working for/with all kinds of companies and gadgets is interesting as a concept. Otherwise the animation was solid and I liked the characters, I do wonder a bit about their boss for obvious reasons though.

And yet I don't. I bigger reaction is more of the reaction to me. Sometimes I wonder what my past self would think of me now, that I just accept it. Partially because it feels like I have seen men in magical outfits so much that is no longer shocking. another part is that I am queer now. The last element is a mix of the two and that I have entirely crossed the event horizon of looking up all forms of degeneracy on a website about a rule of two digits. |

It all comes down to what you are used to I suppose. Grown men in magical girl outfits is not something I see all that often so I do take note of it being out of the norm for me when I see it. Not as a negative judgment but I do wonder why they are dressed like that.

I found about this one late but I'm glad I did see it, that first episode was fantastic. A work place comedy that's already mocking middle management, a college comedy where the best student has already graduated and a magical girl anime where the magical girl doing the nude posing while transforming is a woman in her mid 20s.
No targets will be left standing once this series is complete. |

Yeah, I am really liking the team due to how everyone is bringing something different to the table and how well that meshes together. On the action side we have a magical girl who has great instincts but tends to take on too much by herself and a supporting magical girl who is great at thinking up solutions under pressure. On the management side we have great tech support and a boss who is trusting of his employees.

Still enjoying this anime as of episode 2. And yeah, the supporting cast is good, and I realize that Kana is the MC and that this is primarily a show about a hard working, pragmatic novice opening up a fun new world for us viewers. She's fine and all, and seeing her common sense approach to life contrasted to a supernatural world that doesn't seem based in common sense is fun. But it's not like Kana is an MC we haven't seen before (Management of Novice Alchemist, Sword Oratoria, etc). Hitomi, on the other hand, comes across so energetically that she doesn't seem like a familiar character even if she is one (ummm...I don't think she is?). She seems more like the real MC than a foil though she's a great foil. That plus the mix of technology and magic and professional work blues is what makes this anime shine to me.

Kana is indeed the mc and while she is hark working and pragmatic the show (the boss especially) has made clear that she is in fact a genius in her own way. Not only does she remain calm to analyse the situation but her memory is crazy good. Hitomi reminds me of many shonen protagonists in that she does things on feeling/instinct with a lot of zeal, does not prepare and can also not at all explain to others how to do things. Pretty good balance I would say.

Episode 2
"Welcome to the company, new employee! The first thing we need to talk about..." It's the salary. "... is your outfit!" Later: "We're a start up company!" Got it, no salary as she works on commission.... I'm guessing but this show is speaking a language I never thought I'd need in anime. How long until we get "The true magic is synnergy!" I've seen work anime before but nothing so blatantly predatory. Also, stop stealing from Ghostbusters and why would a USB stick be a stand in for a ghost trap? |

I don't understand the flash drive thing either, but I'm guessing it has something to do with the weird Kaii thing going on. Kaii is both the name of the monsters but is also some kind of energy that can build up and be monitored.
Ha ha, wouldn't it be crazy if the world of this anime is a simulation and Kaii are computer viruses? Ummm...they wouldn't really do that, right? |

Too much QA in another world is not good for you it seems. I doubt that the show is going that way, USB stick wise it indeed makes sense if the Kaii are basically (corrupted) energy and the stick has been modified to store and seal said energy.

They mentioned magical girl companies both small and large in previous episodes and we got to know the largest one this week. The difference between Magilumiere and a big corpo is rather staggering and it seems like the latter is going to be a pain. I am curious what new magic they are going to make on the fly.

Yeah, it's looking like Mr. Limo is going to be setting his sights on Kana in the near future.
And that he and Kana's boss have some complicated past...were originally partners or college roommates or something. The thing I'm wondering about is Hitomi's past work history given how many bitter comments she's made about companies with a stick up their corporate @$$. I guess making up new magic will involve writing code on a computer somehow or other. I wonder why only females can use it? |

The boss doesn't have magical powers... which makes him the "cute" "animal" "mascot" of this magical girl series. Could be worse, he could be a furry.
Anyway, we learn this start up pays his employees a base pittance salary plus commission, which is the worst of both worlds as it not only creates the possibility of unpaid overtime but also people working hard for scenarios where they're needed. It's kind of the reason firefighters don't sell fire insurance.... especially if they got paid bonuses for every fire they put out. Hmmm.... We also learn a bit of the main competition but so far it really only reminds me of ARIA right now with Orange company versus Aria company. |
