I have to praise the fluorescent art style of this anime. It’s as if someone studied drawings of the DIY Club show, then made their own anime out of cotton candy colors and irradiated it. Anything that distinct is a bold choice. I firmly believe that The Duke of Death and his Maid lost a lot of potential viewers because of its own distinct look, which I’m sure a lot of people saw as low budget and immediately dropped. Anyhow, I like just looking at this anime, and the music’s pretty good too. The score is sprightly and light hearted and didn’t really pull any emotions out of me, but it was well performed.
I’m not as crazy about the way the two main characters, Kurumi and Maki, are so high strung and prone to yelps and shrieks and general cartoonish freak outs. It’s a little exhausting for an emotionally burned-out husk of a cynical wretch like me, but this anime has enough going for it that I’m willing to let it ride. For one thing, there’s a reason underdog stories are so popular – who wants to watch a story about some rich, talented, good-looking person gliding through life with no obstacles? And the anime doesn’t make any secret of the fact that this is going to be a story about the magic-less Kurumi going after her dream against all odds. This is emphasized at the beginning, with the mysterious magician who proclaims that everyone can use magic, it’s just that people have forgotten. It's also emphasized at the end, when the other mysterious magican (who obviously has some strong connection to the first) promises to make all the standard kids magic-users. The anime also opened up a lot of small mysteries. What’s the deal with the enigmatic red-haired dude? He seems to have failed the magic course on purpose to join the standard class, but why? And btw, was that other red-haired guy in the magic curriculum his twin, or did the anime just draw two similar looking fellows? What’s the deal with the mysterious shape shifter (right now I’m thinking of her as Loki because the anime didn’t give her a name) who changed into a counterintuitively cute dog and triggered that weird magical fusion monster? Why is she apparently fixating on Kurumi? And what’s up with the new instructor? What’s her agenda, and is she a very young prodigy, or the original mysterious magician who’s been age regressed, or one of those perpetually young looking loli types that I’m not particularly fond of? So yeah, I’m in, at least for a while. |

So this show is magic school show part like a Little Witch Academia or something similar and part Assassination Classroom, it feels beyond the main lead, the whole class are the outcasts and I think they are all going to get their chance to shine with the help of this out there teacher, just like Assassination Classroom.
Only difference I haven't any malice or bulling from the magic class students. |

Yah, I was surprised by that too. I thought there might be some of that "Weeds" type discrimination going on (Circa Irregular at Magic High School, season 1) but now I'm not even sure if that was the case, or if it was because the unusual new instructor had disrupted the normal flow of things. |

Couple of questions and/or observations after episode 2.
The magician at the beginning said that everyone can do magic, they've just forgotten. People think they need special notebooks to do magic. How could this kind of mass delusion occur if magic has been in constant use the whole time? Is it the result of a spell or some kind of government manipulation/regulation or a natural phenomenon. Like the more technologically dependent our society becomes, the fewer people can do computer programming and engineering or advanced math. Magicians who use notebooks are state regulated. The new teacher says that people don't need notebooks to do magic, so doing magic without notebooks isn't against the law. Is this a loophole she's taking advantage of or something else? The MC has a notebook given to her by the mysterious person at the beginning, but she can't use it even though she apparently has magic potential.. It looks like both twins are monitoring the class, and the primary reason they're doing it is to keep an eye on the new teacher. The magician who turns into a dog is apparently straight up evil, not just mischievous, because I don't see how that tree monster wasn't potentially lethal. But the person she's primarily keeping an eye on is Kurumi. |

I am a bit late to the party but thanks to that I could watch 2 episodes right away. I really like the show for how charming it is, how it is presenting an interesting story and how the characters are fun even if most of them are one note due to their particular dream. The story keeps me hooked since there are so many mysteries. It is unclear what the motive of many of the characters are, how magic workes/used to work and how the MC fits into the whole thing. It is clear that several factions/groups are at work to achieve something.
The whole thing reminds me of Little Witch Academia in more ways than one. |

I agree, though I think it is more a combo of Little Witch Academia and Assignation Classroom. |

I could see that but it kind of depends on if the general class is seen as defective/lesser or not. So far it seems like just being able to enroll at the school marks you as an elite and the magic class has not been condescending toward to others as of yet either. So I guess it might be more about what magic used to be rather than the flunkies rising up.

So you can't get into the club you wanted to, the hell with it, just join Team Rocket.
Anyone else think there is more to the owl than meets the eye. |

I didn't think twice about the owl, but the MRC-Lite club reminded me of Team Rocket too.
So their teacher isn't just an idealistic rebel but another person keeping secrets and having an agenda of her own. This magic academy is starting to become ye olde hotbed. |

Yeah, we have at least 4 or so different factions now. The most interesting ones being the teacher and her mission to revive ancient magic and the girl that is spreading/activating the evil element. I like the addition of magic fanatics team rocket, they will probably keep things lively.

Interesting events this week. We end up with Minami possibly having been thrown out of school, the history of magic being revealed (part of it anyway) and Yuzu who seems very much not willing to let magic go join up with Maki and Kurumi. The show is colorful and fun yet there is also plenty of mystery to keep things exciting.

I am starting to get very suspicious of that fat cat the shapeshifter is hanging out with. I think he or she might be her boss and the one calling the shots here.
I can see the Diana Cavendish comparison to Yuzu, but this episode to me shows she has a bit of an Elena Nakuri vibe, in this episode she got to be a little silly, Diana got to be silly, Elena on the other hand. |

I thought the presumed fortune teller's warning to watch out for Mini-Me...I mean, Minami...pretty interesting. I mean, even if this show does take some curves, I can't honestly picture her being a villainess, but it gave me some food for thought.
I don't see why needing a notebook would make for superior magic. It kind of reminds me of that Gold Crest anime, where magicians were taught that they needed to chant and make finger motions because of a demon conspiracy, so that it would slow them down and make them easier kills. Not that it's a perfect parallel or anything, but I do wonder what the agenda behind the notebook belief is. |

Again this series separates itself from Assignation Classroom in that the students from the magic class are not jerks to our protagonists from the non magical class. This episode was the perfect opportunity for them to be jerks, arrogant, cheaters.
Who are the antagonists, we might have saw our main villain for a split second. We saw a man that looked very sinister. |
