Thank goodness, 26 episodes wouldn’t have been enough.

I've noticed this being a recent trend with anime, but what's the reason behind taking a season for a series and spreading it out over separate cours instead of combined?

It provides more breathing room for the production. Even with single-cour shows they're typically working on the season as it's airing, and with 2-cour+ shows the risk of a production cascading into a disaster only intensifies.

The source only says the final season will be 3 split cours and starts in 2025. But article makes it sound like the 3 split cours will all be in 2025.

GOOD. There's like 90 chapters left to adapt, there was no way they could comfortably adapt it in just two cours. 33-36 episodes should be enough, especially since the final saga has several battle scenes where they could adapt more chapters than normal.

Great. I also agree that 3 cours seem right.

I know animation isn't cheap and productions are typically going as a show airs. But still, kind of defeats the purpose of calling the season of a show a "season" if you keep seeing some sort of "season 1, part 2" kind of nonsense. I'd expect that more with video releases.

In a way, it’s really no different from how American television used to do 26 episode seasons. They would air the first half, go on a mid season break, and then return with the second half.

3 split cour is great from both a pacing and production standpoint.

Another one I'll have to backlog...
I hate momentum killing breaks.

Came here to say this as well.
There can only be two split cour in one year (air + break + air + break/break + air + break + air = 4 cour already, no room for third cour)

Partial seasons also exist in American TV and I don´t just mean the Sopranos, a bunch of AMC shows or how Netflix is dishing out Stranger Things these days. 2 part seasons with breaks of 6 weeks to 2 months in winter existed in the 24-26 ep a season days. TV animation being expensive is also a myth outside of extreme cases like the original look run of Batman TAS (89´s Batmania created a surplus of cash for the brand) or cases where the VA cast ends up being a money hole (a problem exclusive to America). Japanese animators make a bit over minimum wage on average with tons of unpaid overtime and don´t even think about what the poor sobs who have to deal with the outsourced portions in let´s say Vietnam get played. Animation is comically unethical. That´s why Pixar films cost so much. The animation is in-house with wages worthy of California being dished out. Illumination outsources most of the work to France cutting wages by half or more and the audience doesn´t care one bit.
Animation simply takes time and all anime studios are booked out in advance by about 2 years. Having off-seasons is the only way to keep going if multiple in-house projects are going on at once with being responsible for outsourced animation on top of that. Add about 200 separate projects and 20 to 30 animated films a year for the whole industry to pump out yearly and one suddenly has to wonder how just one country (+ tons of outsourcing) gets this much done.
The are 11 volumes to adapt so 26 are just about enough on paper but a 4-chapter sequel that became Vol 27, a non-canon (despite being drawn by Boichi) 1-vol side story and the slower-than-normal pacing of the anime unsurprisingly led to more.

It's confusing for viewers but I think it's actually pretty useful for production staff. A "season" basically means "we've secured a commitment to make X number of episodes" and so even if there are breaks in the release schedule to allow production to proceed smoothly, in terms of the actual workflow behind the scenes, it's all one production, and thus one season.

I also came here to say this. Doesn’t make sense for the final season to air over 3 split cours when there are only 4 cours in a year.

Ah I was wondering how they were going to fit everything into 1-2 cours that are typically viewed as a single "season" these days. The final season being 3 cours makes sense since that's about how much they need to properly finish it.
