I wonder how often that happens in the industry.

Another thing the director picked up at Studio Ghibli, as Miyazaki is famous for doing this.

This review sounds like it was written by someone who was present for the debut at Anime Central last weekend (where the director did some Q&A after the showing), and as someone who also was present, I agree with every word of it. I walked away feeling like the concept might have worked a little better in series form, where it would have had more time to flesh out some of the late elements that it glosses over, but it's still a solid two hours of entertainment overall.

I really like pretty much anything that Colorido puts out so this'll be a day one watch for me anyway, but it's unfortunate to hear it doesn't stick the landing. I won't let that affect my mindset going in though

Did they give any other explanation for why the Hidden Village has to be kept hidden? The "village must be kept hidden because there should be a place for people who bottle up their feelings" doesn't seem to be a convincing one, especially when they're (kinda) sacrificing one of their own just to keep the Snow Gods who are responsible for hiding their village. I don't buy it.
[EDIT: Added spoiler tags, since this is a pretty big plot spoiler. - Key]

Like Drifting Home before it, this movie really didn't justify its runtime. In fact, I think this movie might be worse in that respect despite being slightly shorter, since I felt way more sense of narrative and thematic closure by the time that Drifting Home was over. The movie would have benefitted from just sticking with the concept of the mini-oni as a representation of bottled-up feelings and expanding on that more fully.
Unfortunately, I think Penguin Highway remains Colorido's best film and they've yet to get anywhere particularly close to recapturing the magic.
