That good, huh? I missed out on Suikoden back in the day, but I'm no stranger to really weird PS1 games. Might make a good chaser for Unicorn Overlord, but hopefully without scrambling my bilingual brain as badly.
Is it possible to mess up recruitment? I'd rather not be haunted by a decision I made 10 hours ago if the game is of any significant length. (Also glad to see "JRPG" brandished as a sign of quality rather than a pejorative! ) |

It is possible to mess up recruitment right now. Jason Schrier had mentioned a few bugs on social media: https://twitter.com/jasonschreier/status/1782071760336081243?t=mS1sOFhw22ZZexAkscG0Kw&s=19

Thank you for the tip! I was more worried about "daisy-chaining optional recruits across three stages in a specific order to keep from losing out on the best buffer in-game" type stuff, but that is also useful to know. Sounds like this one belongs on the "buy at launch for the sales figures, but wait for a patch" list.

Also worth noting the Switch version has major technical problems. There's a significant amount of stutter and loads times are awful, as is 6-7 seconds just to load into a random encounter (which this being a classic style RPG means a lot of extra loading time). Avoid this version if possible, though it definitely sucks for players (myself included) that Kickstarted the game for the Switch edition.

I'll put something here that may be useful- a guide to recruiting characters, designed in such a way as to minimize spoilers. For people like me who remember trying to recruit all 108 Stars of Destiny in the old Suikoden days, and don't like the idea of trying again with an adult's schedule:

Thanks b-dragon for that doc especially for this style of game.

Sad to hear it's apparently got a lot of problems, but is the recruitment thing actually a bug? Missing recruitable characters is kind of standard for these kinds of games. "One character becomes unrecruitable if you talk to her at the wrong time" seems kind of typical Suikoden unless there's more to it than that. Bloodstained launched pretty buggy too from what I remember. I ended up enjoying that game eventually so I might wait on this game as well until it gets fixed. |

Glad to see this is getting mostly positive reviews. Seems like it needs some polish though, which can hopefully be patched in. Personally I'm playing Unicorn Overlord (after having finished LaD: Infinite Wealth), so I'm probably going to play something that's not a 50-100 hour RPG next lol. Still would like to play the remake/remaster of Suikoden 2 before this along with Rising first anyway. Hopefully it's gotten some good patches by then
As far as missable characters though, from what I've read, characters are missable in that you can miss recruiting characters by the time you finish the game, but not missable in that you're locked out of certain recruitments by choices or where you are in the story. Though if you want to be sure, probably best to wait to play till that's been confirmed. |

The Switch version having the most technical problems is kind of ironic considering it's the one that's topping the pre-sales' charts, I think the Switch version is sitting at 5º place in Amazon Japan, while the PS5 is at 25º and the PS4 at 93º. To be fair, I remember that Eiyuden's developers weren't so sure if they could make the game run on the Switch, I remember they said they were waiting for Nintendo to announce their next console, but too many backers wanted a Switch version, so I guess they did what they could. |

For what it's worth, I didn't cover the Switch version--as we noted, this review is for the PC port. So apologies for not mentioning the Switch's issues.

I'm not sure supporting a broken game at launch just to boost sales figures is the best thing to do and a common problem in the industry already. I think I'd personally prefer to wait until it's fixed. |

Here's hoping that the eventual Switch patch will fix many of the issues plaguing the Switch version, especially the localization.

Aw man, not this again. I have no particular stake in what the changes are, but my wires do get tangled pretty badly when I read one thing and hear something else entirely.
I mean, if this were a AAAA-production by a major global player, I'd be right with you leaving it to rot, but it's not. It's an indie game funded by Kickstarter that needs actual sales in order to prove the studio's viability and give them more leeway on the next project. Not to mention the creator passed right before release, so my heartstrings are feeling especially tugged. Also, I looked into the game breaking "bug" in the guide that was linked, and it sounds like someone just needed to git gud. The game's not that broken, at least on PC. I just started, and my biggest gripe so far is how it supports the DualSense but not the DS Edge. Also, Nowa might have one of my new favorite character intro scenes ever. |

The "localization" complaint is grifter nonsense. Folks took the game and compared it to the Japanese text translated through a machine and griped that the characters don't talk like robots. Eiyuden Chronicle has a very diverse cast with a wide range of personalities, so they actually... y'know... display it in their dialogue. In the time we played Eiyuden, there weren't any anachronisms ("Hey, how 'bout that Bill Clinton?") or meme references. Eiyuden Chronicle's localization is great when you don't have grifters who don't even speak Japanese bellyaching in your ear about it. |
