I was never a big fan of the original series but I've found this remake series to be much more enjoyable because Ataru isn't as much of a jerk as he is in the original series and Lum comes off as less scatterbrained than before.

I originally covered the first season of the reboot of Urusei Yatsura last year, but only for the first season's worth of episodes since the series reviews were cut off for the following season. This is the first time a show's second season has made it into the weekly review bracket with the first season only partially covered.

You might wanna reread these two sentences carefully, because I'm, uh, not sure they make sense.

Current season being covered is the third season, or chunk of shows, or whatever... I think? Otherwise, I think it does make sense, after a re-read and a little consideration.

Yeah, so far I'm not finding this season as funny as the previous one

The issue is that the second and third uses of "season" have a different meaning from the other three. It's basically saying "we're back for the second season, after skipping the second season of the first season".

It's nice to have the show back and the adaption being as on-point as always, with fantastic OP and ED's to match. Also starting off with a story that shows Ataru really does care about Lum was a good choice.

Poor Ryunosuke...at least she got her moms' name. And got to beat up her dad and move out.

This was a really fun one. Shingo had a bit of a problem taking no for an answer but it was nice to see the cast go on a wacky adventure for the sake of Ataru really expressing his love of Lum for once.

Also, Nobunaga Shimizaki!

RE Episode 28

Still, I'm curious to see how the relationship between Asuka and Ton will develop from this point forward. It'll also be nice to see how they interact with the rest of the main cast. But I'm going to have to wait a bit.

If it maintains the original Ton is protective of his sister while Asuka has an incestuous affection for him that her mother in various episodes try's to snap her out of through ruthless and sometimes physically abusive methods.

This weeks episodes got quite a few laughs out of me, so hopefully that's a sign that the season is picking back up.

While watching I noticed that they sometimes subtited Asuka going "*scream* scary man", when it was just "*scream* man". Not sure if that was correctly used earlier in the episode and they just repeated it, not noticing the change or just some odd embellishment...

I drifted away from this remake in the first season when they started cramming in 2-3 stories per episode, but enjoyed the heck out of this two-parter with Mendou's doomed o-miai. I get that the producers have a ton of manga and a not-unlimited number of episodes, but this series works so much better when these stories are given room to breathe.

I’m still shocked that this was remade. This is from the era of sexual harassment as punchline. “Haha, she got groped.” The episode where Ataru harassed a frightened woman (the woman in the armor) for the entire episode was not a good look.

It's kind of amazing how they took a premise so ridiculous as "Lum thinks she's turning into a cow" and used it to deliver one of the most genuinely romantic and beautiful scenes in the entire show. Like they did not need to go so hard animation/direction/performance with such an insane premise, but they did it.

Also it was nice to get a Kotatsu Kitty segment.

The 2nd part of Episode 30 with the travel to ten years in the future was actually the 12th Manga chapter. The reason he's with Shinobu ten years in the future is it was before the Manga author switched focus from Shinobu being the main love interest to Lum being the main love interest (due to fan demand). To reconcile this possible continuity error much later chapter 329 to 332 introduced the character of Inaba the guy in the bunny suit, which is what we will be jumping forward to in the episode next week. Yes we are going from Episode 30 adapting Chapter 12 to Episode 31 showing chapter 329-330. The 2022 version is even more random in the order it adapts the story than the original anime adaptation! (Incidentally they adapted this upcoming arc as the third OVA just after the series ended and after the fourth film, they would go on to produce a total of 12 OVA, last one 2008 after a 17 year gap celebrating the 50th anniversary of Shonen Sunday) and six films.

Hope this arc turns out well. The show has been doing better, imho, when it is willing to bend the old stuff as needed to tell a fun yarn, and not be too concerned about continuity. Continuity was never a big UY worry anyway.

Myself, I found most of the OVAs to be kind of lacking in spark ( or whatever ) compared to the TV eps. Even by UY standards, I think they get too contrived/complicated/overburdened . This one, with spoiler[Inaba], was one of the better ones for me, but stilled staggered a bit, without the running time of the movies.
