The icing on the cake for me. That first episode pulled me in and cemented my love for Risa making her one of my favorite RomCom heroines. Ohtani can be too much at times, but Risa makes up for it constantly. In my top ten Roms ever. |

I've never seen the anime, but I did read the manga way back when I was a teenager. I'm not sure the manga would hold up for me as much as Fruits Basket did, but I do remember enjoying the chemistry between Risa and Otani even if the fact that they're still inexperienced teenagers could make things frustrating sometimes. I might give the anime a watch sometime in that case.

Wonderfully written review, haven't seen Lovely Complex before but this and your essay at AniFem about the dub situation definitely make me feel like I should add this to my shamefully large backlog of stuff to try out.

Thank you for mentioning the essay, and weirdly, thank you also to Glordit for posting the Wayback link to the original Patreon post from the co-writer. That actually answered my question about whether or not the subtitles were really just dubtitles (they’re not), and if I could still get the original experience I had with this show decades ago (yes, but better!) |

I love Lovely Complex. It sounds like the dub is pretty good too aside from some (heavily discussed online) localization issues. Not sure if that will prevent me from giving it a chance.

I'm genuinely glad to read this. Between everything online, and your essay at Anime Feminist, I was sincerely worried for it. Yes a ton of clips got posted in record time to do as much damage control as possible, but between the removed statements by Discotek and Sound Candence, and just, the fact that this person was a damn writer for the show, I'll admit I had little faith it wouldn't be obviously reflected. And it sounds like while it is to a point, it's thankfully not too much of a dealbreaker for fans of the show. It's a shame because the whole reason this even got a dub in the first place is because Amber Lee Connors loved the show so much and wanted to do this as a huge passion project. She didn't make a single cent voicing Risa, and it's a shame someones labour of love became someone elses, well, labour of hate. |

I think it depends what your dealbreakers are. The most glaring change is everything about Seiko who is essentially an entirely different character in the dub than the sub. And some stuff already mentioned with Rika and random meta jokes and humor ("We've been doing this for six episodes now!") I generally don't watch dubs though and only checked it out because of all the furor online but I can say the sub track was fine and that's whats most important to me. |

Just for clarification, Justin Sevakis mentioned that the statements were removed because they need to coordinate some stuff behind the scenes, which implies that there's probably more behind what initially happened than what went down. But who knows? |

I felt the same way. I know why he was cast (many of the show's couples are played by actual couples, Amber Lee Connors and Howard Wang, most notably), but he was the weakest link, for sure, and despite Blaber's supposed complaints with Ootani's original seiyuu, I still preferred Akira Nagata's performance to Wang's. I guess Blaber was wrong again! Aside for that, the dub has been solid so far and very funny, aside from a couple awkward 4th wall breaks. Alejandro Saab as Heikichi Nakao is the biggest upgrade from the original sub. He doesn't speak much, but he had some of the funniest lines and best comedic delivery out of everybody, and great chemistry with his partner Hayden Daviau, who is also very fun. I still prefer the sub overall, but I'm satisfied with this dub, for the most part. |

^Honestly, hearing so much support for the dub is heartening, because I really enjoyed the performances I heard online. But because I apparently live under a rock, I’m just now learning about all the JelloApocalypse stuff, so it’s made me a little wary of the dub, which is a crying shame. I’ll still watch it, but maybe once I feel a little less “WTF, my guy???” about the whole thing so I can enjoy it more earnestly.
