Early days but this is pretty good so far. The main character is a good screen presence, but the real star is the world.

Its strange and works in ways you wouldn't anticipate. The fantasy world here in design and tone feels alien in a way most fantasy doesn't succeed at. Every encounter has an element of discovery. Its no From the New World but its definitely enough to keep my interest so far.

Once the world becomes more known and predictable to the viewer, will it sustain the interest? I don't know but I'm willing to find out.

Episode 1-2

Agreed. I too enjoyed the world-building and the story already shows a lot of promise.

I kind of felt the world-building was being thrown at me at a greater rate than I could care about. When From The New World introduced a concept, it's importance was usually viscerally-presented through the story, while here, it usually just feels like some random detail that it assumes I have an interest in. The head-scratching localization (solist? Unless I'm hearing incorrectly, the Japanese word is just swordsman) is not helping matters.

Well, thats fair enough. Like I said its no from the new world. From the New World created concepts as part of word building around tightly plotted themes, plot and message.

This is more, say, Alice in Wonderland or Jaberwocky. Its alien and different to make you feel alienated, rather than because of more complex themes behind each element (though this does tie in to the theme of MC finding somewhere they don't feel such). So a poor comparison but both succeed in being less tropey and that adds some interest.

Now, with a long anime series that does have a plot, either that comes together to be more comprehensible but still alien (success) or it ends up like a pile of jello (fail). But I'm willing to let it try because its interesting as it stands to me.

The show set up reminds me of escaflowne. Which, I love that show

Also. Are there no weekly reviews for this show?

No one is talking about this show.

I’ll be honest, it’s a mess. Like, wheee is it going? Why is it all over the place? It’s trying to be Fieren but it just doesn’t have any thing. Maybe it’s just me??

I'm enjoying it but yeah it's definitely... a lot. Still, I want me one of those creatures that gobble you up and you end up in some kind of sweet room with snacks. That's travelling in style.

It’s very sloppy to be honest. Maybe it’s going too fast but I feel like I can’t keep up. The cuts are weird and I’m about to give up on it. Sadly.

Pops are awesome! I want a pop plant. It'd be like having potted kittens.

@Kaido: yeah, I'm having trouble telling when flashbacks begin and end. I had to back up to figure out if Adonis getting worked over was happening as they were walking down the street or earlier.

So...I thought I was mostly following what was going on until Ep 4, but I feel like they just threw me into a completely different story. The world seems to run like a symphony orchestra, which I didn't pick up on before now. I thought Soloists were just people with exceptional fighting skills, but then they threw the Battle of the Bands at me, with Conductors, Librettists, and other orchestral trappings, and I'm all wtf. I also don't know what Belle means when she says the Tree won't look at her. I might have to start over from the beginning before I get more lost and see if I can make sense of what they're trying to do.

Still, the world-building is, if not very clear, very creative, what with growing your sword, teleportation beasts and carrion plants that bloom ravens to inform relatives of the death of the corpse they sprouted from. And pops. That is all.

Honestly, I’m just following this one to see what they do with the world. I’m not finding any of the characters hugely compelling, but the show does keep throwing interesting ideas at the viewer without any real context. I can’t really tell if there’s a really rich and complex world here that we’re just getting drip fed and will eventually coalesce into something great, or if they’ve just jammed a bunch of half-baked ideas together. It’s probably the latter, but I’d like to see where it goes anyway.

That’s my feeling exactly!

I think the best case scenario would be theres some underlying themes and ideas past all the obtuseness, like Technolyze say.

The much more likely outcome is its alice in wonderland meets ergo proxy, where all the obtuseness is just a style choice and it doesn't really go anyhwere.

Still, theres worse things and either way it gives it a certain panache so I'll see where it goes for now.

Episode 5

Yes, this may end up being an "interesting failure." I don't mind the occasional interesting failure. Wouldn't want to make a steady diet of them, but certainly better than an uninteresting failure. I really should hire myself out to manga and anime creators as an English nomenclature consultant. I could have explained that "Kitty the All" is maybe not the best handle for a shape-shifting rabbit...
