This explains Super Mario Wonder having a different-sounding Mario now.

Feels like a true end to an era.
I'm curious when we'll find out about his replacement (I'm assuming said replacement will voice all the characters) though it'll be difficult to stand out as more than an imitation initially.

Jokes aside, I'm interested to know who replaces Martinet. Will it be the breakout role for some English dub actor or will it be just another role for an experienced voice actor?

He is going to be dearly missed. I wish him the best of luck with future endeavors.

Super Sad.
I hope this is his decision.

Apparently they already got someone as its been confirmed Martinet isn't voicing Mario in Wonder.

Auditions will be held in a plumbing store/Italian eatery.
If Chris Pratt is too busy/too expensive, there's always the other original voice of Mario, Marc Graue from Mario Hotel.

The only thing that makes me a little weary about this is the fact that this is happening immediately following the movie. I recall that when the first Sonic film came out, they were talking about completely dumping the cast of Sonic actors to potentially have more parity with the film's sound, but then backpedaled on it a bit.
Martinet's performance in Mario 64 is always going to remain in my mind as what Mario sounds like, but I will note that his consistency in pitch had been shifting over the years - I'm not unhappy with how the new Mario game sounds, I'm just concerned about the why is this happening now.

Sad to see him retiring this role, he will always be Mario to me.
But I am looking forward to see who will voice Mario.

well,it's a Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse situation: The successors can't be just plain imitators, but they can't stray too further either, they gotta sound how they have sounded for decades to keep the magic.
Hell,we're at a point where Masako Nozawa will inevitably be replaced as Goku and his family in a near future. She's well and healthy now,but she's also 86(Akiko Yajima was only 51 when she quit Shin-chan because it was getting too straining for her already.),so I won't be surprised if they are already searching and preparing someone right now to take over for when the time comes.

I've thought this exact matter over and I've come to the conclusion that I just don't see Nintendo being this slimy to the point where they will kick Martinet to the curb after Martinet provided the company with a solid 3 decades worth of proven service.
Martinet has gotten there with age and it's high time he saw himself move on to greener pastures. Being a brand ambassador is a perfect new role to him, especially with the way he was cordially treated by Nintendo over the years.
As for the replacement voice actor for Mario, people have been floating Chris Pratt following the blockbuster success of the movie. Personally, I don't see this happening. Unlike Martinet, Pratt is a Hollywood mega star. His service fees would be in the millions and would take a considerable chunk from Nintendo's coffers should they be using him along with Charlie Day, Anya-Taylor Joy, and Jack Black for future Mario projects. If anything, Miyamoto would rather leave Pratt exclusively to the big screen and find a sound-alike for Martinet's Mario for future projects. It just seems like the cost-effective solution to do.
We're in a new era of Nintendo, folks. Martinet's departure from the role as Super Mario is a testament to that.

This. It stinks of Nintendo learning the wrong lesson from the movie's success.

He's been Mario for so long, I could tell it wasn't him from the few sound bites we got in the Wonder trailer. A cut line from the Japanese stream made it more obvious.
Recasts are par the course for the VA industry, but given Martinet's commitment to playing Mario, I still worry about the circumstances.

Considering that Martinet will be 68 next month, it probably was his choice to retire.
