I wish they had used that time on traditional animation...imagine how great it could have been!
The juxtaposition of shiny CG-robot characters and a grimy desert setting was so...ugly.

Yes I recognize that. I meant this part->

Even the name “Julai,” with a double meaning in English and Chinese, was meant to convey the variety of people that existed in it.

I don't speak Chinese.

Articles like these is one of the reasons I keep reading ANN all these years.
I wish we had more behind the scenes on how they make these stuff from the studios themselves.

As for the intricate facial animation system I do recall ANN's article on the complicated process of creating Land of the Lustous. Studio Orange has some very good knowledge in the field of 3D anime and I do respect that.

I love 2D animation. I really do. But people like you who constantly act like "purists" and try to label anything that isn't hand-drawn as inferior or a waste of time/talent are seriously the most obnoxious people in the anime community. It's the same as peeps who want every movie to look similar to Spider-verse in style and that whenever they see one that follows the more traditional 3D animation look instead, already try to dumb it down.

There's not "how great it could'vebeen" - it's great how it is, period. Everything from the animation, to the models to the expressivity, to the storyboarding, the art direction was phenomenal work. It's a step in the right direction, but sure. Go ahead and reject it. Whine about it. Complain about it. Then when you see an actually bad looking CG show, you will whine more about how anime "never has good CG" when it's literally been in your goddamn face all the time.
