This still doesn't feel like a very good marketing move, people are already sour about all the titles they keep cancelling. Instead of trying add another million or so users, they should really be trying to keep the ones they've already got.

Netflix is probably the shittiest streaming service I use and if I didn't piggyback off my friend's account I wouldn't use it at all.
As for their original productions, in the recent years it has been the exception when they release something worth watching.

This is why I cancelled my sub a while back their catalog has gotten really stale I noticed I would spend more time looking for something to watch than actually watching.

It's kind of a mystery how Netflix keeps having to raise prices and do stuff like this to shore up its profits, but crunchyroll seems to be doing just fine. Unless crunchyroll is floundering too, and I just haven't heard about it?

I think Crunchyroll being much more focused helps there. It doesn't have the broader appeal of Netflix, but it also keeps almost entirely to anime so it isn't shelling out for for big movies or tv shows. Netflix paid something really high to keep the Office just a little longer when Peacock got going. Crunchyroll also seems to have slowed, if not outright stopped, financing its own animation and is sticking with some co-produced anime. I imagine not outright funding a whole project helps. Them being the biggest streamer for anime, specifically, probably also helps with licensing costs.
It isn't too surprising that the disc mailing is ending since the streaming has long since replaced it as the main way people use Netflix, but I imagine any cost savings for the company won't be reflected in the prices for ongoing subscriptions.

Netflix produces prestige television, whose budgets can run into the 8-9 digit range (13 Reasons Why S1 had a per episode cost of around 5 million dollars, Stranger Things S4 had a per episode cost of 30 million), while Crunchyroll licenses anime, which is a relatively cheap venture. Even if CR does produce a series, they're usually just one of half a dozen investors.

Crunchyroll abandoned its Originals line for a reason. If you’re just licensing material, and your customers prefer you just license material, you save a ton of cash.
As for Netflix, I would cancel it, but I get it through my cellphone plan. Which I believe will be an increasingly common way of accessing streaming services in general. Apple throws you three to six months of Apple TV whenever you buy a product of theirs, Prime Video is a side hustle to a service people get for the two day shipping, and Disney has a similar deal with Verizon. People won’t cancel what’s essentially a side benefit.

People would just re-subscribe when there's hit shows like Wednesday
Then let the subscription lapse when there's few things they want to watch

What happens if you use a VPN service and watch Netflix on your computer? I'm not dropping my VPN just to make them happy and prove it's my account.

Enjoy chasing over pennies from 5% or 10% of password sharing people who might consider subscribing for more than a month.

According to the article they saw an increase in revenue due to this action since while most people might complain they eventually do make their own account.
