I thought that too but the way Nagatoro gets embarrassed and claims she was practicing her throw wouldn't feel like a proper season ending.

I think the big issue is that the "main" driving force The judo arc hasn't really been resolved yet. I guess they can do one of two three things end it on aquarium date as a quasi cliffhanger end, go anime original on the aquarium date and have it end with an actual confession (this is my least favorite option) or maybe even shuffle things around so that judo arc is the last arc, ending the season with the promise of a real kiss Either way you're right, there's natural endings for the cour but no perfect finalie.

Oh now, don't be that way, a lot of people liked it and thought it was funny and romantic. It was popular enough that S2 shouldn't be a surprise. Now, from what Key said about the rankings of some other shows getting an S2, we might expect even a similarly ranked horrid show like Redo of Healer might get one. If so, Nagatoro deserves an S2 more...

Color my surprise at your surprise.
The source material is very popular.
The first season was VERY popular in America and Japan.
Other shows with source material and TV adaptations that were nowhere near as popular have also gotten second seasons in the streaming boom (see "Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World" right up the page)
It is part of a recent trend of "cute - but not seductive or sexy - girl teases MC" shows that also got multiple seasons. The sweetest and best, "Teasing Master Takagi-San", got 3 seasons and a movie. The middling one, though still notable because it is about college adults instead of middle or high school kids, "Uzaki-Chan Wants to Hang Out" has its second season upcoming.
The first season was done very cheaply and still did well in ratings and DVD sales. The same was true of Uzaki-Chan. Not as much with Teasing Master, though even with that the production values were clearly better in S2 and especially S3 and the movie.
So not only was this show getting S2 no surprise, but expect more "girl teases guy" content in the future.

As a manga reader, I know the series gets better the farther it goes, but man that teaser kinda sucked. Doesnt help it came out the same day as the CSM PV.

Nagatoro is one of the best selling manga in the west, topping the charts on Bookwalker year after year.
