Episode 12 (Season finale)
A cute season finale, at least I think it is just a season finale, as the end said a new anime has been approved, which I guess is another season. Probably one of the best parts was how Sasaki was worrying that he wasn't consensual enough because he wanted to kiss Miyano, which is a fantastic reversal on the often BL criticism of not doing consent right, and even fetishizing a lack of consent. Miyano also had to jump in after their confession scene to make sure they are dating, because he was in universe annoyed when a BL story had two characters confess but not actually start dating in the next. If one had looked at my comment in the Non-Heterosexual Anime Characters topic, you might have seen my comment about the series occasionally playing a bit into some of the problematic fetishization of queer guys, but also that it seemed to do so on purpose. I do think this series has been aware of some problems in BL stuff, and tried to avoid being problematic. As much as the off-screen fujoshi girlfriend that forces her hobby/fetish onto her boyfriend, has also had a presence (as comedy?). The show I think also had its moments of I think stepping away from BL, in being more open to a homosexual relationship such as talking how people will say certain things about them. Also the part where a mother says thank god one of her sons is straight so that he can continue the family or something, which I thought was a moment of certain kinds of homophobia can be behind what might not sound like such. I thought that the feelings were caught early along with a confession, that it could do without a lot of the usual drama, but Miyano apparently had to really come to terms with his feelings. The guy is really into BL, but was sure that he can't be into guys, presumably because he was into a girl once, whether that makes him bisexual. But Miyano's discovery of himself was interesting, from the point of view of someone who was pretty sure about things of themselves and had to take a hard look at those presumptions. My rating of the show is going to be Good (7/10). It is worth seeing, doesn't really do any of that annoying toxic stuff you see in a lot of BL (with the drama), but also probably not going to be everyone's thing, as BL be. |
