Hi guys
My name is Anime_Guy_88, nice to meet you. I once had an account in this forum, as well as others, but due to life I had to step away from forums and even anime for a while. But when I found time for them I forgot all my username and password so I had to create another account. I need someone to explain to me the partnership between Crunchyroll and Funimation. How does it work and does it still exist? I once had a Funimation account and I currently have a Crunchyroll account but I didn't benefit anything from their partnership, not that I could have because I didn't understand it. |

The partnership between the two companies ended almost four years ago, but that's now a rather moot point since the two companies merged earlier this year and are now owned by Sony.

The old partnership was an agreement to share licenses. Crunchyroll streamed the subtitled version and Funimation streamed the dubbed version including their simuldubs. Home video releases were handled by Funimation but came out with both logos if the license was originally Crunchyroll's. The advantage to consumers was that you only had to scribe to one service depending on your preference for dubbed or subbed anime.
Then Funimation was bought by Sony. Since at that time Crunchyroll was owned by Werner they became direct competitors, and the partnership was terminated as soon as could be done contractually. Last year, Sony bought Crunchyroll and is in the process of merging the two companies into one. So far they have stated that the new company will carry the Crunchyroll name and are in the process of moving all the streaming anime to the Crunchyroll website. Effective in a couple of months (July I think) the home video releases will carry the Crunchyroll name. This all sounds like Crunchyroll won. However, I think it is more a question of a decision as to a single brand. Once this all shakes out, I suspect you will find that the management will be part Sony, part Funimation and part Crunchyroll. The name is not near as important as the people behind the scenes calling the shots. This is not a good time to be an employee of either Crunchyroll or Funimation, unless you really enjoy corporate infighting. |
