takt op. Destiny (TV) Genres: action, comedy, drama, science fiction Theme: monsters, music, post-apocalyptic Plot Summary: Years ago, light-colored meteorites fell to the planet and began to usher a new chapter for humanity. But soon after, dark-colored meteorites followed, bringing with them fearsome monsters called D2. Their weakness: music. But music became taboo, as it also attracted them. Humanity's only hope came in the existence of Musicarts and their Conductors. In the year 2047, Conductor Takt and his Musicart, Cossett (Destiny), are traveling to New York while battling the D2. A Madhouse and MAPPA co-production?
Yes. I'm interested. |

Episode 1
Okay, I really am not a music person, but this is gripping me, and I am trying to figure out what and or who it is. I know it has Madhouse and MAPPA co-producing, but I don't think that is it. It took me until the random chibi designs for me to exclaim that it looks a bit like Panty & Stocking, and then I had the weird idea, it kind of looks like Darling in the Franxx. I really might be making an arse of myself, but I can't get it out of my mind in looking for a connection. The director did direct the 16th episode of DitF, which I don't think is enough. Really, I can't find much of a connection at all, so there must be something different, someone on the art. Looking at the credits, I see e-caesar listed under Art Director, and has me wondering who this is since there are no other linked credits. Something about the art feels familiar. Anyway, the episode itself, I rather enjoyed the interesting choice of the American diner and such. Anime doesn't always work so well with the American setting. |

While it does take a lot of dialogue to explain the world, it's such a bombastic and fun ride. I love it.

Strange to this show being produced by Madhouse and MAPPA, when it felt like something straight out of ufotable. The Onyx monsters remind me of Tremors, and more so with the desert setting and all. It's interesting to see this show using the US as its setting... especially the Midwest (poor Midwest; of all the places the monster choose to infest, it's this region). Music as the theme, Conductor + Musicart against anti-classical music monsters is a pretty nifty idea, ngl. This show can go many ways, but most importantly, my interest is piqued to know where it goes from here. |

Episode 01: Conduct -Creed-
Summary: (Same as premise, which I replaced in the opener with my own summary. Future episodes will get their own unique ones). --------------------------------- Comments: After a little research, I discovered this is a multi-media project about classical music produced by Bandai Namco and DeNA. The plan was to make an anime series and a mobile game. At any rate, of all the new titles this season, this is certainly the flashiest I've seen, thus far. It's not just the animation, though. I'm loving the popping sound cues that utilize musical notes. Prior to this, all the other titles I've watched tend to have contrast in the art, as in brighter versus darker scenes, light versus shadow, etc., which is great for general artistic detail. This, however, has contrast in its sequences, action versus non-action. And boy is there a difference! It's not just fluid, it's also really freakin' stylish. I'm reminded of what MAPPA did last year with Jujutsu Kaisen and am blown away by how kinetic this looks. The music consists mostly of classical pieces, particularly lots of Beethoven in this first episode, while the rest of the score is composed by Yoshihiro Ike (Ergo Proxy, Rage of Bahumut franchise). Being set in North America, I heard some pretty cute iterations of honky-tonk music as the crew was roadtripping crosscountry. He doesn't get to showcase a whole lot, since the Musicarts are basically running on classical, but he does have a pretty exhilarating orchestral piece during the second D2 fight. With the show being a mix of vintage classical and Ike's own work, though, and with the fight mechanics also being sound-based, I'm curious to see and hear how well they gel going forward. In terms of voices, our two main actors (so far) are Takt played by Kouki Uchiyama (Soul Eater from the self-titled series) and Cossette / Destiny played by Shion Wakayama. I only know Uchiyama from SE, but I thought he was good in that. His character in this is very laid-back, yet passionate when things get serious (kinda' like Soul). Wakayama has a pretty short list of credits and is completely new to me, but I'm liking the duality between her regular and Musicart personalities. She has this funny and awkward matter-of-fact attitude when she's not fighting, then flips to serious and focused when battling the D2. There are lots of directions this can go. And I'm hoping they use the classical music to, somehow, focus on its philosophical value and the general idea of just how important music is to human culture. I'm pretty hyped for this show. ---------------------------------- Caps: |

A story on how it all began. Surprisingly, the story seems... simple. Like, nothing particularly interesting or anything. Takt is obsessed with playing the piano, shit happened and "lost" Cosette together with his arm, making him basically incapable of playing the piano properly. But in return, he gets to be a conductor (or some sort). The theme is interesting, but the plot seems simplistic and predictable so far. If I were to stay on with this show, it's mostly for the not-so-usual theme of classic music treated as a double-edged sword. Character-wise, the show hasn't pulled me in that much. |

The 2nd episode didn't pull me in as much as the first. A good deal of it was just watching someone play the piano.

I can confirm one thing by now: the plot and theme get my attention more than the characters. I don't find the characters particularly interesting—they're pretty plain, to be honest—but I am curious to know about the origins of the Musicart, the relation between the two meteorites, and everything else. I wonder where the trio is from before they set off on the cross-country journey to the Big Apple. Must be California, based on their route. No planes? The US transport system must have been decimated because of the D2s. |

Episode 3 was good again, and if it continues along these lines. Lenny was a kind of cool character, although also felt like it was kind of expecting certain reactions out of Takt and the audience from how he was. Although, much better than the pretty much straight out homophobia that I was getting yesterday from Vampire Dies in no Time, and Evolution Fruit.

I like Destiny's (aka Cosette) emotional-less yet invariably humorous demeanor. Gotta love a gal who enjoys eating. I wonder if in this show what happens in Vegas will stay in Vegas?

Episode 4
It would have been a pretty underwhelming Vegas episode without something like a casino. A little sad then that the casino was an extra amount of taking advantage of people, by funnelling grants that were meant to help the people rebuild (farming). But cool, even if it felt a bit like watching a game tutorial for its action scene. A little sad that it looks like Lenny and Titan are exiting for the time being, as they were rather fun. Lenny himself showed that he could act rather subtly, making us think that he might be shady or corrupt, but he is a good guy. |

My original enthusiasm for this series is fast abating. This episode provided no insights into the overall plot, just another round of flashy fight scenes. I find that to be true of so many shows these days. Apparently production committees and studios think high-quality graphics can cover over weak plots. In my case, unfortunately, they do not.

Yeah. The writing is very "my first anime". The obviously-evil casino owner was obviously-evil from the first glimpse of him, and was a very clear statement about the show's interest in portraying conflict through human complexity (i.e. it has none). I'm here for the banter, because the plotting is atrocious and the action is so, so try-hard. I still don't understand what the conductors are supposed to be doing, unless the basic idea is that musicarts are just too stupid to operate effectively without someone vaguely controlling them sort of.

Could it be that this show feels half-hearted because it's a collaboration between two big studios, Madhouse and MAPPA? Both are big names with distinct production styles, and it's surprising to see them produce a show together, so this show may probably be a middle ground for both of them.
Don't know if this makes sense, but it's worth noting to me. Both studios love to experiment, but they can only do so much if they're working together. |
