Yooo, that Josuke one was drawn by Coralus! I've followed them for ages, since they were drawing Mega Man fanart on Tumblr. They're way cool, and they have also contributed heavy to IDW's Transformers comics. I can't recall if they've ever done interiors, but I made a point of collecting as many of their covers as I could. It's been heartwarming to see them go from Tumblr fanartist to cover artist, and I urge folks to follow Coralus. They're good people.
As for the Nintendo thing: I just don't have any sympathy for fan-devs at this point. We've seen Nintendo drop the hammer on them a million times, I guarantee you that your new mod for Metroid will not melt the heart of those Japanese businessmen. Change the characters, change the title. You're saving yourself the trouble. Yes, I know Sega is extremely permissive of fan game, but have you seen the state of Sonic the Hedgehog lately? Sweetie, Sega has nothing BUT the goodwill of fangames to go off of these days. Nintendo isn't that desperate and they won't be for a long time.

Triangle Strategy is going to be at TGS, speaking of TGS 2021, most of the stages are early in the morning this year (4-8 AM in the US) instead of late at night like usual.

I don't know if you count Atlus as Sega but Atlus is pretty restrictive too. I remember a lot of streaming restrictions and posting video footage and spoilers when Persona 5 came out and again for Persona 4 steam release despite it being such an old title. But strictly Sonic? I agree Sega needs fan creations a lot more than Nintendo does. Sonic Mania was basically a fan game and it was the best Sonic game in decades. Companies that put out quality stuff can be strict and want to guard their IP. Sonic is sadly in one of those states where almost every official game is mediocre at best so Sega has to be forgiving when it comes to the blue hedgehog's fans and exploits otherwise once they alienate them they'd have to rely strictly on quality of product rather than fan loyalty.

- Jack-O Challenge: I love this kind of drawing trends, like the Hands-Free Bubble Tea, the I-Shaped Balance or the Virgin-Killing Sweater, it always encourages artists to be creative. I’m not very familiar with GG, I only played the original and Xrd, but didn’t Jack-O already had this pose on a previous game?, it really speaks of how much popular the series has become with the release of Strive
- KOF XV: the game is looking great, perhaps the graphics aren’t as stylized as the ones in Strive but it looks much better than in XIV and the amount of characters at launch is pretty large compared to other fighting games, still I hope that Kim and his team appear together again, I also wish that characters like Daimon and Shingo can appear as well. I hope that XV can do as well as Strive is doing right know, KOF has never been as popular in the U.S. as in Latin America or China, but this could be SNKs breakthrough moment. Speaking of which, could it be possible for GG Strive and KOF XV to run on the Switch, I mean if MK 11 can somewhat run on the Switch it could be possible for ArcSys and SNK to make downgraded versions of their games, there are almost 90 million users on the platform.
- Smash/Nintendo C&D: honestly at this point people should just give up, I know it frustrating how litigious Nintendo can be about their IPs but I don’t think their position will change in the near future, and despite all the legitimate complaints about their business and game related practices they're doing better than ever financially, so it would take a big hit for them to care about their harcore players and allow them to make fangames
- Overwatch: is it me or OW is a magnet for controversies? Trace’s pose, Phara’s alternative costume, Activision-Blizzards problems, and now this. At times it seems that OW is more well know for its fanart and controversies than the game itself

Except that in the case of the Smash thing, it's not even a fan game. It's a mod of another mod of a game that's over a decade old, a patch that changes some of the mechanics and rebalances things. There is no universe in which it is actively harmful to Nintendo's control of the IP: it's freely available, it doesn't redistribute the original Wii game, and it sure as hell isn't taking any sales away from Ultimate. The only possible reason Nintendo could have to oppose the project is their bizarre pathological aversion to Smash appearing in the tournament scene, or their desire to push back against activity like this solely for the sake of doing so. Maybe it's because I grew up in the PC sphere, where modding is a way of life that has seen people get hired because of it, and entire games and even genres have been launched due to it, but Nintendo's attitude toward this is utterly incomprehensible to me.
And even if you're talking about full-fledged fan games, I genuinely believe that companies that take a draconian stance on them are only hurting themselves. The people who decide to make projects like this are the most hardcore of dedicated fans, people so invested in a universe that they want to play around in it themselves. Don't quash that passion, harness it! Again, in the PC sphere there are any number of examples you could point to. Valve has a long-standing history of hiring on entire mod teams (hello Counter-Strike), and more recently, they not only gave tacit approval to the Half-Life remake project Black Mesa, they worked out an arrangement allowing it to be sold for profit on their own storefront. Or look at Myst: its developer, Cyan, has released fully-3D remakes of the original game on multiple occasions, but they've never had the resources to devote to doing the same for its sequel, Riven. A fan group started their own project, which not only received tacit approval from Cyan, they were later officially brought on by Cyan to work on it. These sorts of gestures create massive fan goodwill and a positive association with your brand, whereas Nintendo's draconian stance does nothing but foster ill will. It's a very antiquated way of building a relationship with your fanbase, which to be fair is how Nintendo operates across most aspects of its business.

Half Life is more or less dead, as are Valve as a developer these days after Artifact was a total bust. Half Life 3 is never coming out, so getting fan made Half Life games is all they can do to keep the franchise alive. And personally I found Black Mesa not to be hat good or worthy to be 'made canon', so to speak. That's not the kind of situation Nintendo is in where they're dominating the console market with a popular system and putting out super popular games. I have not played Myst since the first one way back in the 90s, but I have to imagine it's still a very niche series with a small fanbase in this day and age so it's in a similar situation where the fan modders might just be carrying a dying franchise so they're in more of a bargaining position.
And at the end of the day, I can't blame Nintendo for not wanting to associate with the FGC scene after so many people have been outed as bad people. They seem to be doing fine managing their own competitive scenes for their games like Splatoon 2 and Ultimate. I also have to imagine all the modded characters in Project M would open Nintendo up to a legal copyright nightmare if they officially endorse it. Or at the very least, using someone elses IP to profit like these tournaments were is still illegal no matter how you slice it.

I dont think valve studios are dead from artifact. Far from it since they release half life: alyx and dota underlords in 2020. Its just the valve dont release games we old school pc gamers like anymore. With their massive financial backing and ongoing experimentation with technology I expect they will keep doing their thing of only releasing games that they feel can push into new markets or idea's.
They have lost their old story writers and designers and become somewhat more mercantile in their game choices. So I at least understand the idea of wanting them to be dead.

Japanese companies in general are really protective of their IP, some days ago Gainax ordered a group who were trying to restore their Daicon short to stop, Khara ordered people who were making Evangelion fanart to follow strict guidelines and Tsuburaya isn’t too keen on people making fanworks of Gridman. Despite the culture of doujinshi, not all japanese companies act the same way. It’s very possible that most of these takedowns came directly from Nintendo’s Japanese offices.
Regarding SEGA and their lax attitude towards fangames, I don’t know if it boils down to Sonic not having as many good games as he once had, the Sonic brand is still very profitable to Sega, but perhaps it's due to Sonic being much more popular in the West (Sonic was designed with Western audiences in mind), still it seems that SEGA doesn't want to tarnish their reputation with their fans, Nintendo on the other hand doesn't seem to care

This whole Jack-O Challenge is making me think of the Bowsette craze not too long ago. People and artists will milk this for several months, and then it'll be mostly forgotten and just some meme we remember later on.

I think its more that they brought the character back to the new game, and new fans are checking the old stuff of it, and then it exploding from there again. Basically what's old is new to a new generation.

That's a nice bit of schump news there. Hopefully Sol Cresta will at least have the story translated if it can't be dubbed.
Still waiting on the flip grip to come back -_-

You just pretty much explained what the beef some had with KOF12 which wasn’t the size but characters like Mai not being playable.

Except depending on who you ask Sega has been alienating Sonic fans at least since 96 or 99. And then here comes the Switch port of Colors not being optimized properly.

90 millions users on the platform wouldn’t equal 90 million players, playing switch ports of those games. That aside FighterZ did get a switch port so I could see Strive maybe getting a Switch port but considering none of the Xrd games were ported to Switch hell of a long shot.

I'm not saying that those ports would sell 90 million copies on the Switch, but WB Games said they were satisfied with MK 11 sales on Nintendo and I think DB Fighterz did good numbers on the platform as well. If a hypothetical port for both games are well done and properly advertised they could manage to sell some copies. Street Fighter, Samurai Shodown and BlazBlue are available on the Switch, so it's not like fighting games are uncommon on the platform

Jack-O Challenge: Pure Internet gold.
KOF XV: I was singing Cece Peniston's Finally when this trailer dropped. It was equal parts comical and infectious how earnest the trailer was in throwing the kitchen sink at us with "Here is everything you have been asking about!" We even got a look at Masami Obari's short! It's clear SNK is really going out of their way to please fans, and the actual system mechanics are very promising. Overall, love everything I'm seeing & apparently KOF XV is gonna get a full 50 minutes at TGS.
Regarding the roster size, COVID definitely had an impact, but I think what really disappointed people is that once the 39 number dropped it greatly shrunk the potential possibilities of who is gonna make the base roster. To add to that, out of who is left, we know roughly 1/2 so...not many surprises left.
Also, KOF XII was a glorified beta sold as a full game in an era before gamers at large understood such things. And, SNK needed to make money off those expensive sprites.
April O'Neil: I'm very excited for Shredder's Revenge, and she definitely isn't going to be the last character revealed (hello Splinter & Casey Jones). Also, April's Street Fighter-inspired moves were not lost on eagle eyed FG fans.
Activision-Blizzard / Overwatch: There is an old saying that "the cover up is worse than the crime," and it is a massive shame to not see that applying here. Only thing worse is that people will continue to play their games & give them money. Also, as shallow as it is, isn't the McCree name change counter-intuitive? I would imagine that this is going to shoot up the value of all products with the McCree label in collector's circles.
BTW, that long set-up was totally worth it for your Shredder pun Heidi. Kudos!
TGS & Platinum: Please show us Bayonetta 3 & Project GG!
