You often hear US comic creators going “the business is doing great! Our numbers are way up!” My response is usually “You aren’t writing Jujitsu Kaisen, you’re writing Green Lantern.”

I usually ignore this, but you are wrong. Bookscan is for graphic novels only. It only lists graphic novel compilations. Individual issues(which makes up for the majority of American comics) are not listed. Not only that, but a lot of money from American conics is made on different market's. Look, i get that we love to hate on American comics because you people can't just like both things and have to compare and war with one another, but bookscan is not a good evaluation. |

Yeah no. I've seen the sales for those individual issues and they are not selling Jujutsu kaisen levels of copies. And no it's not because we "can't just like both things" alot of people just aren't into American comics. Even in America comic books are mostly a niche thing nowadays with a popular joke being how millions of people watch the movies but few people by comparison are reading the comics. |

The direct market numbers show us issues shipped to stores, not issues sold to customers, since comics are non-returnable And companies are very notorious for manipulating and padding numbers by over-shipping floppies to comic stores. They're not a very reliable way to gauge profit or popularity. Either way, the average floppy ships about 35,000 to stores. Even if you count all of those as sales, which they never are, it's not a lot in the grand scheme of things. We see the comic market breakdown every year and manga and Scholastic pretty much dominate it. The American comic market is mostly manga and Scholastic books like Captain Underpants and Dog Man. And unlike manga, movie and television adaptions don't lead to boosts in comic sales. I say this all as a former comic-book fan. I take no pleasure in seeing the state the industry has been in for the past two decades, but I'm not going to deny the facts. |
