The death of movie theaters has arrive. I can't see any way these big chains can survive this.

I don't think so. By that logic, newspapers, radio, broadcast tv should all be gone. Theaters will probably be smaller, but people want to see things on the big screen |

We'll definitely see less theaters but we'll probably also see the remaining theaters step up their game in terms of presentation. I use to be a cinematech and I can tell you most theaters don't do well with upkeep. I've seem movies at some major chains with stereo systems that sound worse than the cheapest home theaters.

I think theaters will be like the record industry. It will mainly be catered for people specifically interested in the experience The average person will most likely not go. Especially if they have children, or are busy with work. Something similar to the Alamo drafthouse, a place strict on rules and usually has only people that are there to actually watch the film. I really hope anime movies will stay, I love watching anime on a giant screen. |

Theaters will need a new approach. Instead of ripping people off for snacks, they'll have to adjust. I think most people are more than content watching at home - the benefits of a theater are often not worth it when you have to deal with other people causing distractions and such.
Every movie should take this path. |

Newspapers are on deaths door and numerous have already gone website only. Radio has two saving niche's the car and retail. Theatres have made up for collapsing audiences with huge yearly price increases and that is only sustainable in the short term. Sure if you live in a big city with a multi million population you will probably have 1 or 2 cinemas but for everyone else it will be as accessible as live theatre. |

The issue is that the high price of snacks is basically where a theater's entire revenue stream comes from nowadays. The the vast majority of the money from actual ticket sales gets handed over to the movie studios, with the studios withholding the right to show the movies unless the theater agrees to the arrangement. The more popular a movie is expected to be, the larger the cut demanded (as in, 90% of first week, 85% of 2nd/3rd week, and 80% of 4th+ week ticket sales for movies like Harry Potter). |

You gotta make money off of them somehow, and who knows how many theaters will be left when this all said and done?
