This is likely only just the beginning, especially with the state of emergency declaration looming.

Following the Chibi Maruko Chan news from yesterday, now it seems more likely that other shows will be affected as well.

Maybe these ancient shows can be retired and their time slots given to newer anime that deserves a chance to shine when people are actually awake? Shows like Chihayafuru do not deserve to be put in late night time slots.

These "ancient shows" are the ones that huge segments of the Japanese viewing audience actually watch. Sazae-san and Chibi Maruko-chan are consistently the two highest-rated anime broadcasts of the week, and it's not even close. The audience for something like Chihayafuru is minuscule in comparison.

Amen to this. Those "ancient shows" make boatloads of money for the production companies to justify continuation. Suddenly cancelling them, or even putting them on a long hiatus could potentially drag those whole franchises down.
