This show is one big NOPE. I remembered watching the original series. The one with 25 episodes. Back then I wasn't so enamored by the show; I thought it was decent but no more than that. Now when I look back at it, I realized just how much I underappreciated it. It was actually a really good show, and ironically this sequel showed me why. Original series: Sakura the country bumpkin. She meets the theater company, and her rosy image of them shatters right on one day. Bitchy Sumire. Ice-cold "Kuassary" Maria. Socially withdrawn Iris. And a greenhorn for a captain named Ogami. Ayame and Yoneda were barely holding everyone together, and they had to fight monsters led by their ex-comrade. It was a company that's not a team, an incomplete product made froma ragtag group of people not just battling monsters, but also their own demons. It became a complete product by the end of the series, when Sakura pulled them together one way or another. See, that was a good show. This time? Screw everything: the whole company was dumped right in front of you that's already gelled. Each character is already developed (apparently), it already looks like a team that's working together. The original series painstakingly took time to introduce and develop each character; here, I don't think I'll be seeing anything. The new show is just bells and whistles without substance. It's visually appealing (although I loathe the excessive CGI that makes the show visually... sterile) and snazzier than the original series, but look beyond that and I see nothing mesmerizing. I admit that I am passing a lot of judgement just from the first episode, but that's honestly how I feel. It's going the complete opposite of the original series, and that makes me appreciate the old one even more. It's quite reminiscent of the same feeling I have towards the new Fruits Basket series. Dropped. edit: I see how they're reusing the classic BGM and songs from the original series. Sorry, doesn't work for me. Clearly it's cashing in on the nostalgia. |
