So I was watching The Simpsons on my local fox station, and it was the episode when Troy McLure was hosting a show that mention all of the "spinoffs" from the Simpsons. Some where like princable Skinner and police cheif wigam went to New Orleans (I think) to become private eyes.
After watching that episode it got me thinking if there is any anime shows that have true spinoffs. What I mean by spinoff is where a minor or beloved character is moved to have there own sereies. |

Not that I've seen this spinoff series but Rumbling Hearts has Akane Maniax anime#3916 It's about Haruka's younger sister, Akane and the new student who boldly declares his love for her.
I hope that it will arrive here soon. I'd like to see it. |

Yes, it's happened. While she wasn't the main character of The SoulTaker, Komugi gained enough popularity for her to get her own anime, called Nurse Witch Komugi. Most of the characters from The SoulTaker are used in it, and Komugi is the main character. It seems to take place in a completely different universe also. And unlike The SoulTaker, which is mostly serious, Nurse Witch Komugi is pretty much 100% comedy. |

I wonder if Puni Puni Poemy, a spinoff of Excel Saga, would fit this definition? Both feature Nabeshin, but he's not the main character in either. Poemy does have a cameo in Excel Saga, IIRC, but I would hesitate to call her even a minor character in that story. Plus, she didn't get an entire series, just a 2 episode OVA. -Murph |

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is actually a spin-off of a short OVA series called Triangle Heart (which was based ona game, I believe). In this case, the spin-off seems to be far more popular than the original.

Azumanga Daioh has an OAV spinoff called Azumanga Web Daioh, and lets not forget the Sailor V manga which is a spin off of Sailor Moon which took place before Mina/Sailor Venus joined the Sailor Scouts.

Does Mai-Hime -> Mai Otome count?
Same characters different story/setting? I thought the OP was looking for shows based on a single character i.e. Friend -> Joey type thing (since I cant think of an anime that does it ) |

Could be, but actually Mai Otome is considred to be more of an alternate Retelling kind of like the Escaflowne movie being an alternate retelling of the Tv series I don't know, but thats just me. |

I'm not sure that really qualifies as a spin-off. I think Sailor V was made before Sailor Moon and it is supposed to be canon. If so, then it wouldn't qualify as a spin-off.
I wouldn't call it alternate retelling. Its way too different. They aren't even on the same planet, and some character personalities are significantly different. The entire premise is vastly different. I'm not sure it quite qualifies as a spin-off either, though. It's more of an alternate universe, than anything else. I personally saw the whole thing as an animated AU fanfic. |

My-Otome is definately not an "alternate retelling" of My-HiME (did you watch both series?). I don't know if I'd really consider it a spinoff either, since their connection is debatable. Both also seem to take place in a different world, either that or a completely different time period. Could be a sequel, but the evidence is so sparce, I wouldn't call it that either. Edit: Meh, HS already beat me to the point. Still point proven... |

Does that mean Giant Robo is the ultimate spin off? As I understand it is a culmination of all of a certain author’s works. There is Gin Rei spin off of Giant Robo.
Is Please Twins a sequel or spin off to Please Teacher? I guess it is more of a sequel, though I haven't seen it. |

I haven't seen Please Teacher, but I saw Please Twins and I'd say its kind of both, but more of a sequal than a spin-off. It's not a sequal in the traditional sense as the main characters are completely different and has nothing to do with the first series plotwise, but it appears to be the same world/timeline. While the main character of the first series only has one or two brief cameos, the teacher and other characters from the first series show up regularly. It appears to take place a year or so after the events of the first series.

The Tenchi franchise also has its GXP spin-off which focuses on new characters who are introduced through secondary characters in the main series.

Angel Links could be considered a spinoff of Outlaw Star. It takes 2 very minor characters from Outlaw Star and uses them as part of the main cast in Angel Links.
I'm not sure it fits the exact idea outlined by psychotim, however, since I don't think Duuz and Valeria would generally qualify as beloved characters from Outlaw Star, since they appear so briefly. |
