"It's only America that thinks this show is too hardcore"
Thinking emoji.
I imagine they got a lot of complaints from angry mothers
Oh and just a note to ANN: AnimeLab has uploaded episode 4 now, so sourcing issues are over with

Were even they not told about how explicit this show would get?

Huh, I never actually thought the bubble was going to burst on "we're presenting our porn as a normal show". I'm kind of glad (not out of any maliciousness towards the show, it should be allowed to exist and all.)

I'm finding this hilarious, especially now that this anime got quite an infamously popular reputation for its content. Apparently an youtuber fueled it in an angry rant regarding Funi, and it escalates it into people unironically pushing 10/10s for this show on MAL with or without score-bots.
Currently holding #2 place in there in its way to #1. This is definitely going to do wonders to its sales, or so I hope. The more money Passione gets out of this for Higurashi, the better it is for me.

You mean "ironically" because they don't honestly think it's 10/10. The YouTube basically trolled and told people to rate it high. His misplaced anger punishing MAL instead of Funi (even though again, they're probably really not at fault. They can't air porn). The troll scores will be fixed eventually. They're basically the same as "bots" because most are from new accounts and people that never even watched the show. They're just wrongly assuming Funimation is "censoring" stuff when in truth Funimation dropped the show so they they could AVOID censoring it. It was below 7.0 before all this. That's an accurate rating for how most people actually watching it felt it was worth. It's not an awful show, it's not great.
2nd,I doubt this will effect sales much at all. It's not that popular of a show to begin with in Japan as far as I can find. Third, Passione likely wouldn't make much more money even if it did increase sales a bit. They're just one member in the production line. A few other companies will take most of the profits (if it makes any).

I somehow doubt these people actually care about supporting the anime industry.

I missed the other articles on Funimation and then other places dropping this show. I get that Funimation is not interested in the title, even if they do like to license ehci shows, but why even licence it to begin with? There is a manga that they could have consulted to see what type of show this would be. It would be better to hand pick a select a few sure hit titles to simuldub and then on some of the less promising titles to decide upon later, rather than throwing money away on an incomplete dub.

That is going to be hard to explain to new comers in 10 years. "Why is THIS show the highest rated on MAL?"

I think the guys who made this probably thought that as long as they could argue that those depicted were not human, they could get away with it.
AT-X holding that fort no matter what though.

The source manga is way more tame than the anime. The anime has added pretty explicit sex scenes (at least in the uncensored version).

Ecchi titles are normally very lucrative financially-speaking for Funimation, so the show would have normally been a sure fire hit actually. Given how fast paced and competitive the simulcast market is, that licensing process is probably pretty quick and often made without super extensive context/completed footage. There was a manga available, but it was way less explicit than the uh ambitions of the anime production team. This was especially made clear by Episode 3, which was just straight up soft-core porn and raunchier than their other mature titles. Funimation isn't going to put their name on that or make it available on their apps with no age gate. Also, I'd barely call it an "incomplete dub," they only finished one episode (where the majority of the ADR staff and cast were uncredited anyway).
