She shaved her head for dating? That's crazy. That happened when I was barely getting into anime, so this is my first time reading about it.

Yeah, apparently Japanese fans don't like it when their favorite idols decide to date or have their own lives outside of pleasing their fans. When it comes to stuff like this, they're furiously entitled. It's something about the fans owning the idol if they so much as worship them, buy merchandise of them, go to their events, and so on. It's stupid and weird, I know.

Not only Japanese fans. Pretty much all idol groups in East Asia and Southeast Asia doing the same thing. For example, JKT48 (Indonesia) impose contract termination for a new member who found dating.

While I certainly think it excessive, the difference is entertainers are actors fulfilling a role, whereas here we want the real gritty celebrities. It isn't about ownership, but when you invest your time and energy into a story you don't want to be sucked out of it. Sounds reasonable. Though like anything, japan takes it to 200% further than it needed to be.

Career-wise, it's quite an achievement that she managed to stay that long in the group.
