The other major problem is that the female protagonist comes off as a bit of a manic pixie dream girl, a trope that Otherizes women as magical creatures while also at times infantilizing them.

That could be a problem if the book and film were full of other female characters like that, but she's the only one. How can a writing trope "otherize" a particular gender unless it's applied broadly, like racial and gender stereotypes are? Is the mere existence of such a trope character really sending the message that everyone of that person's gender is a dreamy-eyed space cadet, or is it just, you know... that character?

I mean, the hapless, clueless male virgin otaku who's nervous around girls is a much more common trope in Japanese entertainment, but I would never suggest that it's problematic because it's not trying to say anything about males in general, it's just a lazy trope that writers like to fall back on.

Oh, hey, this book finally got release here! I'm glad to see it reviewed. I do hope to check it out for myself soon. Isn't Penguin Highway scheduled for release at some point too?

It came out in March. I haven't had a chance to read (or review) it yet, but it's on my shortlist!
