guess we're sticking to the "Your Name" formula here. a shame Shinkai isn't trying to be more creative, with his clout he could make anything - but this right down the beaten path when it comes to Shinkai. oh well, maybe someday he'll branch out rather than just ticking off his list of tropes.

what "formula" are you talking about? that there's a boy and girl involved in a relationship? sounds like all his other movies. But if it looks good and is well written what does it matter?

That's just the thing, ultimately it doesn't matter. Nothing is truly original. It's just a matter of how well made it is.

you seriously can't see the striking similarities to "your name" and even his previous works from this trailer? it's structured in exactly the same way.
-RADWIMPS music video paired with moving setpieces (will happen within the first 10 minutes). song will play again in the 3rd act during tonally inappropriate moment
-country vs. big city dichotomy
-seemingly ordinary high school boy
-seemingly ordinary high school girl
-linked by thread of fate/slight hint of supernatural elements
-crisis occurs due to said thread of fate/supernatural powers at play, temporarily separating them

and, since shinkai finally learned happy ending = box office success, instead of his infamous depressing ending they'll probably be reunited in the end after a few minutes of tugging on the audience's heartstrings.

at the risk of sounding overly cynical, i'll just top this off by saying i liked your name. but i don't want to see "your name" again with some words switched around. i want to see new stories. this seems all too familiar.

So excited to see this. I love Makoto Shinkai's works and judging by this trailer, this shouldn't be a letdown.

The last time Shinkai did a change in formula we got Children Who Chase Lost Voices, and that was a pretty failed experiment. As a result of that experience, he might be once bitten twice shy to be too adventurous like that again. I for one don't mind. It might be a tried and true formula, but it's one that's been working for him and is entertaining each and every time.
