(10th release of DBZ and we still can't get a new one for the OG Dragon Ball TV series.)
I'm sure this set will be fine, but I have the Dragon Boxes, so I'm pretty set. I have zero interest in the Faulconer score, I don't care about collectable figures, and I barely have any room to reserve for bulky boxsets.
I'll probably pass. But hey, it's good they're putting out a 4:3 Blu-Ray release.

Funimation really expects people to believe that there isn't that much demand for DBZ

2500 preorders? That can be reached by the end of the month easily. I can just sit back and wait for it to come out then. Dragon Ball is one of the top five most popular anime in America alone, so there is no fear of it not reaching such a goal.

Not even if they are using the original broadcast audio (which I keep hearing that they found) so you don't have to turn the volume all the way up in order to hear the voice acting in mono?

I'm sure there's demand for DBZ, but these collectors sets? Not so much. Funi has produced too many of them, and some of their prior collections were of very poor quality. Even those who might be interested in CEs in general may be turned off of this one, because they already have an older CE, were burned by an older CE release, or figure the next CE will be better, anyway.

Heck If they include the original broadcast audio and aspect ratio (uncropped or zoomed in) from the Toonami days, they can take my moneh! I have the complete Dragon Box set so if that doesn't happen, I'm still safe. Plus, I'm working on collecting the original single DVDs since that's the only real way to watch the original Toonami dub with Faulconer track. But yeah, I'm also still waiting for a redub of Dragon Ball with the latest voice cast on BluRay.

2,500 by the end of the month? They’ll never make it.

Eh, it's not so bad.
I have higher anime purchasing priorities than buying DBZ all over again. It's not like it's a short show. I bought Bubblegum Crisis three times, but that was 8 episodes! I've got other titles, that I don't even have once, to buy.

Nope. I don’t buy this. This is the same shit they pulled with Escaflowne. Funimation is the biggest anime distributor in North America and Dragon Ball is the most popular anime in the world and you’re telling me they need assurance that people will buy this? They’re essentially holding this set hostage. Where are the details? Is the set cropped? Is the audio for the Japanese version remastered? Has it been edited like literally every set they released except the Dragon Boxes? Are the subs locked? If this were any other anime or distributor these questions would likely be a given but this is Funi we’re talking about. They have a reputation and it ain’t a good one.

I'd be more interested if they put out a BD release of the original Dragon Ball which as penguintruth stated has never been released on BD before. I'd only be interested in this boxset if it's the perfect dream set that fans have been deserving for the past several decades but Funimation has screwed up on DBZ in some way with their releases in the past, so I wouldn't be surprised if they screwed up on something like this too. I'm also worried this will be another Legend of the Galactic Heroes situation where Funimation will put out an overly expensive boxset that only a select few anime fans can buy for a limited time.

Quote: | Funimation explained that it is not looking to crowdfund the set on sites like Kickstarter as those crowdfunding platforms "are typically asking fans to fund the creation of new content, not something like a collector's edition which may be cool but isn't quite the same as new content." |
This is incredibly rich given that they held a Kickstarter for a friggin' license rescue.

That is why I'm going to adopt a wait and see approach to this. The pre-order quota will be met and then we will see if it's worth the hype for once.

I'd said it's a more worthwhile purchase if truly done right than unneeded and uninspired new UC Gundam feature #3478 that you'll predictably think is good.

So FUNimation wants us to buy Dragon Ball Z? Again?
How about Gen Fukunaga growing a pair and acknowledging the skeletons in his closet regarding his company's past releases of the show and admitting that he took advantage of everyone's trust and patronage in the property and the industry itself just to lift himself and FUNimation to the top.
Sorry, but these Malibu Stacey tactics towards Dragon Ball Z are an embarrassment and I'll be damned if I'm gonna lick Fukunaga's boots just to appease him for no other reason than "I like anime and I want to support the industry by his sole terms".

I could see them doing this for a semi-popular or less-famous title. Maaaaybe even for some other popular series of theirs.
...But Dragon Ball Z? Really? Like it's going to be so difficult for them to hit that 2.5k pre-orders in the first place, even without the time limit. Like others have said, this just doesn't sit right with me in that they are holding back boxset details until that goal is hit.

I have zero confidence in Funimation considering their past BD releases of Dragonball, especially when they're asking people to pay first before we even know the full details.

So the publishers in japan do HD remaster of all sorts of obscure titles, yet they won't do one of this extremely popular title.
And why does Funimation need a pre-order minimum, this is going to make it and they know it. So this is just blackmail.
