Anime is a story like any other but lest constrained by physical details and opinionated audiences. But the only real parts behind anime characters, are the artist that draws them and the voice that tells their story. Even still I have found that one anime character of the opposite sex stands out to me more than any other. For me, it is Marlene Angel from Blue Gender. I know the more than casual anime watcher can name a couple characters that really stand out, but one more than any others that you would spend your time with in life, if bearing in mind that character was, of course, real. I was curious how many of you have found this to be the case with you.

Begin criticism now.....

No... I can't really say I've ever fallen in love head over heels towards ink on paper...

At best, I might've come across a situation that was like "I like this character's certain quality. Wish I found that in someone I know." Or whatever...

I wasn't really aware that people could "fall for" a drawing. I mean like stable people who aren't touched in the head or something. You always hear about exaggerated cases that crop up every now and then, like the man in Japan petitioning the government to allow him to legally marry Mikuru Asahina of Haruhi fame, but aside from that I always thought it was just sort of a knee jerk stereo type that comes out when people mention the more hardcore otaku. That being said, sure there are certain qualities that make some characters more endearing than others. Sort of like comparing a character like Senjougahara to one of the random moe blobs that have been churned out over the years. But that's just writing, which is why I can't say I've ever felt any sort of an attraction towards fictional characters, because they aren't real.

They're not? Then explain your reference to Senjougahara to other "moe blobs".

The fact you specifically named one character makes her real. Granted, it's not real in the sense you can physically meet this cartoon character, but rest assured she is "real".

If we remove the supernatural/magical/unreal elements of a character, these people are indeed real. We meet them every day.

The mannerisms, attitudes, and emotions are no different than the person sitting next to you.

So while this "attraction" debate continues, it's not impossible to "fall" for an anime character.

Because one isn't falling for the drawing as much as they are about the mannerisms of the character.

And if anyone here thinks they can't do that, they're only lying to themselves. There's always that one (or more, maybe) anime character's mannerisms we wish [picture girl here] had.

Now that I've cleared this up, the mannerisms I've been attracted to in anime are:
Asa (Shuffle!) - Because I once knew a girl just like her.

Wirlhelmenia (Shana) - So logical and straight-to-the-fact. No emotion issues with this one.

Shiori (Kanon) - Yep, knew one like her too. What really impressed me about this one was how damn honest the character was to herself, just like the girl I knew in real life.

Well, that's all for now. This was fun.

Lots of hot anime girls I've fallen for. Kallen in Code Geass ans Anzu/Tea from Yugioh are among the list of girls I'd want to date the most.

Topic previously discussed in the following threads:

Crushes on anime characterse: Is it possible? (Dec 2008)

Crush on an anime boy or girl? (Aug 2005 - May 2006)

Don't let that stop the discussion, but read the previous threads first. Maybe somebody said something worth noting?

I find it amusing that anyone can still think this way in the midst of the Twilight phenomenon. It seems clear that people can easily crush on fictional characters in the same way as idols/celebrities, and in fact do so in large numbers. (Go read the Shugo Chara! forums on Crunchyroll and count the number of girls swooning over Ikuto. It's not a small number.)

I think I may have, probably should be a bit careful with what I say that I dont want to look pathetic. I reminded myself that the person was not real, but I think I was so emtionaly attached to the character. I am trying to remember the exact character, but I seem to have mentaly locked it.

After looking at some pictures I keep for series I have seen, I think that I have been reminded of character I liked. But as much as I am trying to remember specificly, the more my mind is fighting against itself Laughing . I think I am unconciously trying to stop myself from having what some would consider to be unnatureal.

Anyway I am not quite comfterble with sharing any atm.

There was one anime character whose mannerisms I felt attracted to, back in the day. Ryoko, the space pirate from Tenchi Muyo!. Crazy, crass, not caring about your opinion or anyone else's, she did what she wanted when she wanted. Sure, at one point in time she was evil, but I couldn't help but feel attracted to that trait. Like no matter what happened, you'd have a blast if you were around her. That is, of course, if she didn't actually blast you and blow your head off on accident. A loose cannon, but a remarkably fun loose cannon, to be sure.

Though lots of people may fall for a character because they are really attractive, they can also fall because they are attractive and have an admirable personality. Orihime in Bleach has big boobs (main reason I like her) and a cheerful and friendly personality. Heck, her English voice, Stephanie Sheh, is somewhat typecast as attractive girls like Michelle Ruff is.

I suppose it depends on how 'serious' a 'relationship' you're looking for. If you mean 'fall for' in the way a teenage girl falls for a movie star or musician, putting up posters and looking up pictures on the internet and fantasizing about what-if-we-could.... then yeah, many times- I personally have always thought such crushes are good way to let off emotional 'steam' that might strain an actual relationship (provided you've got enough presence of mind to recognize it as such.)

If you mean something more serious, something that would stop you from persuing a real-life relationship for fear of 'cheating' on the fictional character... no, never. It's one thing entirely to play around with a puppy love crush, it's another entirely to let it affect your chances at extended, real-world satisfaction.

I like the way PetrifiedJello put it. I'm not necessarily "attracted" to the girls, I'm attracted to the personalities they were given. I've always liked my women to be kinda tomboyish and how can I not find a character with a tomboy personality fun to watch? That's what anime does nowadays, it plays to certain viewers personal interests.

That said, there are a horde of tomboys out there I find myself "falling for". At the top are Asa from Shuffle, Hikari from Special A, Ryoko from Tenchi Muyo and Revy from Black Lagoon. Yeah, Revy too. I love women who can get physical and who don't come off as high maintenance. I'm not gonna lie, it's really awesome when I give a girl a friendly push and she pushes back.

Honorable mentions go to Bloodberry from Saber Marionette J, Saber from F/SN, and Yukino from Kare Kano. I could go on and on, but I'll leave it at that because I think everybody has got my point.

This person... speaks the truth... the girls like Ikuto... a lot! Another example to look at would be Mio from K-ON!, remember the 'who would you like to marry' poll from a few months back?

I can only think of one character in recent days that I adored in that sense, and that is none other than Sheryl from Macross Frontier. Her character was just so perfectly portrayed. She was a major celebrity but she valued her fans and actually performed for them rather than because of contracts and/or money. Her support of Ranka was also pretty endearing and I could not get enough of her bossy yet playful nature. She's easily one of my favorite characters ever, and I would love to know somebody of her personality in real life.

I'd probably need my anime list to be completed to list all the characters precisely so I'll just list the characters I remember.
Maybe it's good to announce first that appearance really matters in my case.

Amber from Darker Than Black.
Not really my first, but I gotta admit I had a crush for her. No matter what Hei did to her in the anime she didn't change her mind about him.
Belldandy from Oh My Goddess! Yes, really. I was about 13 or so when I first saw her at an anime magazine. Back then I was fixated on stuff like this, goddess etc...
Nowadays I dislike characters like her.
Lenalee from D.Gray-man. Until they ruined her hair. After that I lost any motivation to watch this anime I had left.
Saber from Fate/stay night. By now it should be clear I prefer blondes. It's been so long I can't even remember the reason anymore.
Oh yes, before I forget. Miharu from Gasaraki. She didn't talk a lot. That's probably what attracted me.
Lilianne from Princess Resurrection. For the way she treats everyone else. Go ahead laugh as much as you want.
Yuki from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. She only talks when she feels like it. And I'm pretty sure she's really popular out there.
Arcueid from Shingetsutan Tsukihime. Been too long, can't remember about the details. But it's definitely something to do with the fact that she's a vampire/blonde.
Miu from Linebarrels of Iron. Gentle, cute and great body. Her sister-like figure was also attracting, since I never had a sister.(She was the latest one so she gets the best praising)

Well that sounds pretty much like a listing. I'd love to go into details but, it was a temporary crush I had for them during the series, crush that was over once the anime ended.
So despite how I never really had a crush for any girls, it's still hard to believe that I left some characters out of that list...

Edit: I was thinking about mentioning her first but I forgot about her.
Mio from K-on. She's probably the youngest in the list and for the first time in my life (while watching K-on) I've felt like a phedofile (actually I have no idea how they feel, but if I had to guess that would be it).

I've only "fallen" for one anime character and I was young, very young (5 and 6). I convinced myself that I was going to grow up and marry Tuxedo Mask (from Sailor Moon). The other girls at school also though that they were going to marry him and we figured we would just share him. It worked out very nicely in my mind. I was devestaded when I realized he wasn't real.

I've had TV crushes on characters. Never really fantasied about marrying them like I did with Tuxedo but I felt drawn to them for their personality traits not looks. Shinku (Rozen Maiden) was one example. She was always so prim and proper, the perfect little lady, I was also a bit envyous of her.(That reminds me that I need to get the Traumend box. Very Happy )
