I wouldn't mind NaLu happening in this version. Heck, Mashima was such a tease with that ship in the main series.

That's because, unlike the MCs of his first series, he never really saw them as lovers. In fact, the anime staff leaned more towards NaLu than Mashima himself did. And he certainly didn't think they'd have a kid.
BTW, if you're wondering where the idea of their daughter Nashi came from, it was a response to a "what-if" question ("Suppose Natsu and Lucy had a kid. What name would you give him/her?"). And even then, on top of being a combination of Natsu and Lucy's names, "Nashi" also means "nothing" in Japanese, a tongue-in-cheek way of saying he didn't have any name in mind.

I was aware of he "what-if" question. Even if the anime was NaLu-friendly, there was certainly a lot of evidence of NaLu in the manga.

Evidence that they're more than friends, maybe, but they're still less than lovers.
