No matter what anyone says Hitomi's material was the most hilarious and that was one running gag that never overstayed it welcome.

You and me both, pal. By the end of the show, anything Anzu did threatened to release a stream of manly tears from my ducts.
Agree with the review; a good show with some great direction and comedy. I felt really bad for Hitomi though; she got to experience the millenial working life as a 12-year-old

I still find it weird every time I see Hinamatsuri referred to as a comedy; something about its pacing and presentation makes it feel more like an absurdist slice of life that just happens to have some really funny segments, rather than a comedy, which in the purest sense is focused on building up and delivering jokes. Either way, this was a clear highlight of an already really strong season.

Probably one of my favorite series from the season. The comedy doesn't touch go too much like Gintama where everything is mocked and ridiculized as in Hinamatsuri. The staff tried to show difficult themes like homeless in a realistic way. The way the homeless are shown and help Anzu is incredibly well done. Same with the yakuza. Nitta becomes like a father to Hina (of course, after the disowning episode).
Still, a shame the staff skipped some chapters from the manga where Hina deals with robbers and kidnappers but without understanding the scenario and danger. Her deadpan personality is probably one of the shows' greatest strengths such as the rock paper scissor game where she falls asleep during preparations, starts mocking her rival in the still monotonic way upon being food and pulls the rock three times in a row.

This show is my #2 AOTY behind Aggretsuko. Really good stuff. Funimation's simuldub was also solid.

I found exactly the opposite to be true. The transitions between the character drama and the comedy usually resulted in tonal whiplash for me; I found the combination significantly less effective than it seems most others did. Furthermore, the drama, especially when it focused on Anzu, tended to get way too heavy handed for me, so that element was in and of itself was not particularly effective for me. On the other hand, I thought the comedy was consistently the show's strongest suit, and as a result I think I almost would have preferred the show to be a pure comedy.
Oh, and Hitomi best girl.

The faces in this show were outstanding and had me laughing a lot during its’ runtime. The drama’s execution was done quite well as it was absolutely not clumsy and was definitely one of the best parts of the show. I’m sincerely hoping for a season 2 and that the cliffhanger will not be the last we will see of these charming characters.

So I take it the show wasn't able to make it to the punchline of the Hitomi plotline? Did she even get to being CEO, let alone queen of Japan?

count me in. Hitomi's segments are easily my favorite part of the show. what I won't be forgeting anytime soon though is the Ouch sounds disguised ad kung-fu voices, and of course the smartphone guy, the animation on his facial expressions is priceless

This has become a favorite of mine. I really like the heart involved in this anime. It brings the audience to tears at certain points. As far as a comedy, i would not call this a comedy. It has funny parts, sad parts drama and all around goodness to it.

This is going to be a reoccurring sentiment as the reviewer didn't get Hitomi's material at all. Her running gag wasn't "Oh, why is this happening to me?!" but rather "Why can't I say no to people who keep trying to use me?"
She knows why it's happening to her, that's the joke... and that's the reason for that face.
I was only let down by the ending of the show; I knew about the time skip but I didn't expect the show to be such a troll about it... though in hindsight, trolling's really their bread and butter...

I'm not much of a fan of 'reaction face' anime anymore, and whenever Hinamatsuri tried to go for that kind of humor it lost me. I thought Hina was a lot funnier than Hitomi for that and some other reasons, but really the reason I liked the show was Anzu.
