Wow, this is awesome. A lot of those designs are awesome. Makes me wonder why they didn't eventually release them in later generations; maybe then they wouldn't have had to scrape the bottom of the barrel as much.

This is awesome. I always wanted a Vulpix pre-evolution. And Ko/Raitora looks awesome.
So does pre-evo Ditto. It has a pacifier. Adorbs.

This is surely a testament to Game Freak's artistic resources. They had the wherewithal to not only create a full set of new monsters, but also reject and redesign a wealth of them mid-production. (At least there was no requirement to animate them.)

Is that one a farfetch'd evolution? It looks like a bird holding something.

Quote: | The designs for Remoraid and Octillery also more closely resembled weapons, which makes sense given their naming scheme. |
This is an article where using the original Japanese names would really help out. Their beta designs look pretty much what their names say: Teppouo (Gun Fish) and Okutank (Octopus Tank) Teppouo's back looks like a bullet chamber and the bottom fin looks like a trigger, and Okutank is obvious enough.

Someone watched too much FMA on that legendary beast #245 looking like what Shou Tucker did to Nina...yet the rest look cool.

That is pre-evo of Grimer, not Ditto. Ditto would have gotten an evolution.

One of the picutres is broken.
Anyways, I prefer some of these Pokemon, but not all. I don't like Proto-Smoochum and Proto-Porygon2 was just weird (I've seen a picture of it elsewhere). Also I can see why the pre-evolution of Girafarig was cut... it didn't make much sense...
Also my favorite Pokemon of all time (Igglybuff) is ones that was altered but it was one of the ones that was the least altered (it lacked the tuft on the head).
Either way these are interesting...

Man a lot of these things are way cooler than they ended up actually being. Remoraid/octillery make sense now, the black Hoppip looks awesome, Girafarig is much better (and that pre-evolution is badass) and I actually really like those legendary dogs.

It's criminal that the Meowth Pre-evolution was let go.

I was gonna say that the Ditto Evolution looks like Chibified Alphonse.

I have been hearing about this on and off throughout the day, or the past few days and have been ignoring it up until now as I did not care at the time and thought it was something I have already known. I appear to have been wrong.
I wish the pre-evolutions made it to the main games as some pokemon could stand to have baby forms. As a side note the baby muk looks like it came out of Digimon. Thinking about it the baby muk reminds me of a particular kind of digimon that I cannot remember the name of at the moment. The prototype design for hophip is also reminding me of a particular digimon that I can't remember the name of, but I do know they are the pre-evolutions for the koromons which are the pre-evolution to Digimon's mascot, the augumons.
Concerning the original design for the fire starter, I see they were going for a design base on the lion-dogs (or the komainu). I especially see it in the second form. Makes since considering the setting's theme of Pokemon Gold/Silver is a more traditional Japan.
Concerning the original design of the girafarigs its reminding me of Cat Dog. Plus I would like to know what went into the though process if their pre-evolutons being two ghost heads connected.
Concerning that the ditto were going to get an evolution, I remember learning of a fan game a while back in which the ditto have an evolutionary form and thinking how ridiculous the idea was giving their ability to transform and therefore thinking they do not need an evolutionary form. Well it looks as if Game Freak was considering to have the ditto evolve at one point which comes as a bit of a surprise to me.
As for the others worth noting I am intrigue of Porygon's original design, and I kind of wish the kotara and their evolve form made it into the games. I feel I might grow liking to them.
One more thing: as Emma mentions the picture featuring a kotara and raitora is broken.

I just realized something... the final version of Girafarig combined both the original and it's pre-evolution. No really the pre-evolution kind of looks like the tail. That's really interesting if you think about it.
