Nice article. When starting on the new series I couldn’t remember whether the “my only fear is that there could be someone like you on the other side” bit was original or not, but it did feel badly out of place
 . The “please make the universe your own” line in Reinhard’s backstory episode was a slightly similar addition.
My personal opinion is that the new series is doing a very good job despite a few unusual missteps, and sometimes improves upon the OVAs in certain areas, but the OVA series was just handled so abnormally well overall that it still can’t measure up in aggregate. Taking some slightly different paths and including some new material (both original and from the books) gives it value as a companion series, though — plus people will value various aspects of the old and new audio and visuals differently. |

Yeah, the OVAs are never going to be surpassed. They’re too ambitious, executed too well. But that doesn’t diminish DNT—which is also pretty good! Most of the differences are necessary owing to the differing formats and more limited scope. Kinda like Peter Jackson’s Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Which IMHO is the ideal way to approach any adaptation—be as faithful as you can within reason, play to the strengths of your medium and change what needs to be changes, and focus more on accurately recreating the spirit of the original than superficial details.
Which, sadly, is pretty rare. I can only thing of a handful of of em, but all have been pretty great, from China’s epic 2010 adaptation of Romance of the Three Kingdoms to Yasuhiko Yoshikazu’s Gundam The Origin (most emphatically not the anime), Space Battleship Yamato 2199, and... that’s pretty much it. |

It has been an age since I last watched the original OVA's. One things for certain the production values of this latest offering are pure eye candy. So far my impression is favorable. Will this ever be as in depth as the previous OVA not likely being it will be shorter , and will not have the time to delve in to deep. Still I am extremely pleased to see this new adaptation.

I was worried the CG would make the visuals of the battles boring, and I was pretty right about that. Look above to the two shots of the red haired pretty boy. Because they 'can' copy and paste dozens upon dozens of ships or more into a shot, they are free to paste them into the backgrounds.
The new version isn't bad by any means, but it continually uses much of its freedom and modernity to no avail. This show is the gigantic statue of A. Heinessan. |

As someone who hasn't watched the original OVAs (and not really planning to, it's far too lengthy - which has its merits), DNT is definitely still an engaging show in its own right. I can't judge it through comparisons to its source material or older adaptation, but it's a very entertaining show each week.

You might already know this, but just clarifying in case that the OVAs don’t actually use many more episodes to tell the story than the current series, it’s just that the new series will only adapt the beginning of the story (approximately the first book I guess). So if the current series keeps getting renewed and eventually finishes the story it will be close to the same length. If you want more after the new series ends, consider trying an OVA episode once a week or similar. Should be fine to skip to the point where this series left off — a few of the characters will look different, but they often have onscreen text introducing them anyway. |

Hmm... Still not sure what version I should pick if I want to get into this. The OVAs sound more like something I'd like, but 162 episodes is certainly a lot. Nowadays I even have trouble finishing series I really enjoy, so it probably wouldn't work out...
How's the English translation of the novels? I've heard that the first three volumes at least had a pretty poor translation, but has that improved any in subsequent volumes? |

Ugh... whatever the differences are, the 110 episodes OVA is a far superior alternate version. Concise it may be, Kaikou seriously needs to address the other characters that made this series so beloved. We've yet to see OvR, Mittermeyer, Muller, Poplan, Kesler, Hilda(which I doubt will be shown at all) and a whole lots of others...
Merkatz already made some cameos, so I think they will at least adapt the Imperial Civil War to some extent. Oberstein is still pretty much his old self, for now. I sure hope they can finish on a high note to at least compel the watchers to go see the sequel movies. |

This may not make much difference, but just mentioning that the main series is 110 episodes and the rest are side stories and prequel stories. I’m unable to judge the translation quality (though the audio books seemed fine to me) but in my opinion the OVAs actually improve upon the books in most cases. The new series makes occasional improvements but, in the early episodes at least, has tended more towards leaving out important details or reducing subtlety. |

My beef with the new LOGH is the characters designs. I just don't like how they look so I dropped it like a hot rock before getting anywhere. And I don't feel bad about that.

Maybe some people prefer them looking more modern but they certainly seem more bland and generic to me.
You might have heard this already, but in the old series there’s also: * My Conquest is the Sea of Stars, a movie that was made before the OVA series and takes place shortly before the events of the first book. * Overture to a New War, an expanded and improved version of the first two episodes of the OVA series. The commonly recommended viewing order is to watch those and then the OVAs, but you could reasonably start with either one or skip to the point you’ve watched up to via the new series. |

How so? It's telling the exact same story (bar some minor differences in execution to be closer to the source) in a pretty compelling and well made way so far.
12 episodes for one novel isn't concise. It's the same amount as the OVA when you remove the OVA's 5 original/Gaiden episodes (eps 9, 10, 11, 13, 14) The characters you mention are not mentioned in the novel yet (I think Mittermeyer and Reuntal have very small roles in the first novel. They cameoed at the end of ep 2, anyway and are in the OP so we'll see them at Amritsar, if not in ep 8) and at best only had brief, wordless camoes in the OVA up to the same point. Even the famously infodump-y early OVA episodes didn't introduce everyone at once, so give the show a while to introduce the major players as the novel source does. Hilda doesn't turn up until the second novel (ep 17 or 18 of the OVA if I recall) so there's no reason for her to appear here yet. There's no reason to cut her out either, she's a very crucial character on the Imperial side. |
