I was interested in this one; the film is one of the best i've ever seen, so i wasn't sure i actually wanted to read the book if what i loved was actually the film. From the review, it sounds good, so i'll be checking it out soon.

The book sounds very interesting...if very different from the movie.

It's really best to think of the book and the film as two totally separate entities, both good in their own rights. I ended up enjoying them both, even though they're so different. But since even Mima comes off as a pretty different character between the two, it's pretty easy to distance them.
On another note, I couldn't work in naturally into the review, but the author says in his afterward that he is deliberately looking at fan "ownership" of idols and idol fan culture, something he was a big part of at one point. He and Kon just had different goals for the story.

Ended up getting this 50% off during Barnes&Nobles Manga Monday sale. Glad I did, since it sounds like the original novel is strong in it's own ways compared to the film.

Oh that's so interesting about Eri Otchai, considering she was the friendly actress playing the detective in Double Bind.
I thought Rumi was also in it? In my Satoshi Kon book it says everything is different except for Mima, her career, and the killer?

Yes, Rumi's in it, and she has a decently sized part. She doesn't make a huge impact thematically, though, which is why I didn't really get into it. But don't worry, she's there!

Interestingly enough, there is a plot like this that actually hapenned... in USA.
Rebecca Schaeffer, was killed after an crazy fan saw her in a movie in bed with other man, so, he went to her house and shoot her because she was no longer pure.
I wonder if this inspired the novel.

This was the first book in a long time that I just couldn't put down. Every time I decided to take a break, I was back to reading a few minutes later. After I finished it, I rewatched the movie for the first time in about a decade. I remember liking the movie when I first saw it, and while I didn't hate it on this rewatch, it certainly didn't feel as good as the novel. But yeah, VERY different stories, to the point that character names are pretty much the only thing the two share.
