I've only ever been to two anime conventions myself but, at each one I noticed how easy it was to steal items from dealer's tables. From dvds to manga and even Gundam models it all seems like a simple job with at least two people and a bag.

As my friend put it, " Anime fans are too occupied looking at what they want to buy, they won't notice if you walk off with something unless they were looking at it. And there's no way a dealer can keep his eyes on the dozens of people browsing a table every minute."

Is the situation is the same at other major cons? Or do the event promoters provide more security?

It's not as easy as many think. Some booths do leave themselves open sure, but not as many as people think.

For starters yes some con centers do supply security. Sometimes city police can be hired for off duty service. Either one of these options though cost money. That money is paid by the con itself and the people running it. If it's not a large con chances are they can't afford security.

Second, most cons have their own staff roaming as security. Most dress in plain clothes and you won't know they're staff. I myself have done this once before at a con. A lot of Dealers will ask the con staff to have a few people roaming to keep an eye out for shoplifters.

Third, the stand can bring their own security or rent some out. They owners can bring their own or hire out any from the near by area. In the end it is mostly up to them to acquire security for their own booth. Even the ones hired by the con have to patrol the whole con and not just one area.

Stealing from anywhere is pretty easy, anime cons aren't much different. If anything, I'd almost say they were harder than most stores since there are actually people there that might happen to be looking at you. Either way though, that's pretty low if you ask me, to steal from vendors at anime conventions. [Secret Ninja-Edit: Yeah, those dealers aren't exactly rolling in cash. If you're going to steal anime & manga, at least do it the old-fashioned way with bit torrent & IRC ~Zalis]
