I don't think there ever won't be a time where we don't have giant fighting robots. I just think we ain't there yet. Another 200-300 years maybe.

Giant fighting humanoid robots simply don't make sense. The center of gravity is way too high making them unstable and a much larger target than necessary. Also no one needs arms on their weapons. A standard tank form is much more sensible.

It's like that scene in 20th Century Boys where the scientist tries to explain to the Friend cult that a giant bipedal robot like in anime is wildly impractical and would be nearly impossible to pilot. Everybody just keeps arguing over what kind of giant robot it should be and ignore his protests to their ideas.

When it comes to weaponry, you are correct. But there can be moments where lifting and grasping comes in handy on short-notice. Like a friendly being stuck in the mud / sand, or lifting a collapsed building to save lives.

But what keeps real Gundams being practical is the armor and mobility. Right now any infantry with an anti-tank missile would quickly dispatch a Gundam if it hit in the leg.

I would vouch that there are more pressing matters to which government research and spending should be allocated, but my understanding of Japanese politics is that nobody with a chance of governing really cares for such points.

I'll say it again Gundam even though are considered REAL ROBOT are not feasible at all and that come from a Gundam Fanboy.

But Mankind can achieve something more akin to MechWarrior or Armored Core technology wise.

Were almost a step closer to starting a One Year War against North Korea and ISIS if this project is realized. A real-life moving armored suit that functions like a gundam would be a good turning point.

Real gundams could probably be SWAT police storming buildings, cause they could be piloted by a person from elsewhere. There could also be other scenarios where being shaped like a human would be of an advantage.

However, from an evolutionary standpoint the human shape gave us the ability to use our arms at free will (thus making tools/weapons), and keep our vitals away from the ground where most predators could catch them. There are probably better shapes than the human body in machine form for both those purposes.

However, biology is believed to be the next great field of technological breakthroughs, and it can make far more resilient shells than any armor or metal. It also apparently has the potential to outdo computer science by a milestone where one could even add things to the human body, like increased memory storage, maybe even "personal" experience. Imagine us making a new species of "machines" that are adapted to live on other planets, or maybe even an alternated version of humans. Imagine if these creators also become attached with weapons of massive propositions. Maybe we need to think about our space ethics right now so we don't end up as the evil surge of aliens that wants to conquer all.

Uh ISIS poses no threat comparable to Zeon especially as the combined might of the U.S.,Iraqis,Jordanians,Syrians,Kurds, Israelis, British, French etc are seeing well to making sure their threat level as a large scale group is severely mitigated.

North Korea maybe but the North Koreans themselves have a history of talking shit unlike Zeon (who actually do things in the name of their goals) and the only reason they haven't been stomped into a nice fine paste is China propping them up for reasons I don't think even the Chinese can logically justify.

What buildings are you planning on storming with a giant robot though? Most buildings don't have doors thirty metres high, and if they where planning on levelling the building they could just blow it up....

That's so cool. It's like NASA discussing the possibility of building a space ship that looks exactly like the enterprise from Star Trek. Anyway it's pretty silly though to think that mecha's could be practical: tanks are mechas and their shape is converging more and more to lower and lower profiles to be harder to attack and knock out. But I think that other common concept in Japanese science fiction is more feasible: powered armor which are human sized mocha's are actually being developed by US army.

Though I think that tanks with legs can become practical. I mean caterpillar like legs on a tank frame like those spider tanks.
