About time Pluto got an anime adaptation. I'm pretty sure the wait will be worth it and they can use that time to make the anime with the highest quality.

Great news.

What a blessing. I read the first 2 volumes of the manga because of the announcement and I have to say that it's an incredibly good manga. I'm looking forward to this. The Patlabor project is probably cool as well, but I'm far away from getting into the franchise. I saw a tweet that said that Pluto will be made by MAPPA, that it will be 8 long episodes long and each episode will adapt a volume. That tweet also says that Maruyama will be the producer, which makes sense since he's been saying that it's one of his goals to give Pluto an adaptation.

^ He's at the event and says it's MAPPA and 8 episodes for Pluto, an episode for each volume.

Will Pluto make any sense to me if I have never read or seen anything from Astro Boy?

Yes, it stands alone pretty well. Reading the original Astro Boy story it is based on provides some context, but is absolutely not required.

Shocked Shocked Shocked Whoa! If it's confirmed this could be the best news anime-wise of the decade. I guess since Masao Maruyama is going to attend Anime Expo (I think?) we'll soon find out. Keeping my fingers crossed

Sweet old Maruyama finally getting his lifelong wish of making a Pluto Anime. That makes me so happy. Laughing
Now if only he could get Kon's movie finished as well. That's the only thing he hasn't yet gotten made.

8 episodes?so i guess its not a tv series but rather an OVA/Movie series like Kubikiri Cycle or Digimon Adv Tri.

Yeah, it's worded in the tweet 8 LONG episodes, which means OVA or film format as well. Will be more like Space Battleship Yamato 2202, Kara no Kyoukai, Hellsing Ultimate I'm guessing. Hoping for 60min/3 episodes worth per an episode as each episode adapts 1 volume. The producer said it would take 39 episodes to adapt.

If the fleeting charm of last year's reboot can be maintained, the new Patlabor project is likely to be a worthy successor to Headgear's original incarnations.

(That said, I enjoyed WXIII, so others may prove to be more demanding of new additions to the franchise.)
