In midst of the current mess, is a high budget anime film really the best way to ward of a bankruptcy?

Better to go out with a bang than a whimper.

$40 million?! That would be on the high-end for even a Studio Ghibli movie.

Heh. I know!
I have a feeling this might be Gainax's swan song.
Ironic, too, since Wings of Honneamise; Royal Space Force wasn't exactly a hit for them, either! It only later became an acknowledged classic on TV broadcasts and home video releases!
Been a few years since I've seen it... Maybe I'll pop in my Bandai Blu ray version of it!
Honestly, as far as Gainax goes, I'm still hoping for a release of the original Gunbuster OVA on Blu ray. I have the Bandai DVD release but I would like a Blu ray upgrade... I'm thinking it's not happening for any number of reasons. I'm just hoping it's not a rights issue because even Otaku No which is far more obscure got a Blu ray release in the US!

This will be like Genocidal Organ, Gainax will go bankrupt but transfer the movie to a new company.

Interesting; I hope it finally works out for them. I wonder if this is still set in the world of Honneamise, or if its completely its own thing now.

The money is coming from the films publisher, so technically it is not their money.

I don't know what's this anime project is all about but judging by the red airplane I am all behind it I have a 80's feeling judging by the artstyle.

Yep I feel the same. I'd be happy to see it do well and turn things around for Gainax and also renew interest in 80s/early 90s style sci-if anime, but don't hold my hopes too high on either count.

This is where they could turn to some American film studio (not Disney) for aid. The exchange is that company is the DVD/theatrical distributor but they use LA voice actors (not the celebrity VA approach).
