We're on ANIME News Network. All I want to know is if JYB liked it. Anyone agree?

Well, since the Black Ranger is Asian in this continuity, I think the writers wanted to avoid the whole "Asian automatically knows martial arts" element. It wasn't an issue with the original series since several of the Rangers had already trained in it (and Billy was learning), but in this continuity it would have been especially awkward since none of the new Rangers knew martial arts beforehand IIRC so Zack being the sole one with that sort of training would have been pretty stereotypical.
Also, do we know for sure they weren't impressed? Sure, they listed a few criticisms but that doesn't mean they didn't enjoy the overall film (like how some people hate Ewoks but still enjoy Return of the Jedi overall). I would say this Power Rangers film really worked overall, it had a lot of genuine heart and the cast clearly got into their roles. Also, I noticed only Jones specifically went into the new version of his character. I thought Billy was the best part of a pretty solid group of characters in the movie so I wonder if Yost was pleased with this version of his character. I really hope there's a second movie. Yes, the film underperformed in the box office, but audience reactions has been generally positive and I think the less-than-stellar ticket sales is more due to how many high-grossing films have already came out (Logan, Kong, and Beauty and the Beast; Split and Get Out also did really well for original films). Hopefully the studio takes note of that. |

No it would've been even bit as chintzy and corny as it was in the original series.
Complaints like these are the things that bug me the most. |

dunno, it's special for them, so it's valid; one of the things I hated of the first higurashi movie was the horrible delivery of the "uso da!" line, so I guess morphin time holds similar significance for them.

The way Lionsgate funds their higher budgeted movies makes it doubtful a sequel gets produced. Unlike most studios, they don't distribute their films themselves in all major international markets. They tend to license it to local companies (or local branches of multinationals) and use that money to pay for the movie. The benefit of that model is that they've made sure no single film flopping really hurts them (because they've already recouped the majority, or in some cases, the entirety, of the production costs before the film opens). The downside is that you essentially become even more risk adverse than every other major studio because you need something to sell to international partners. If you have a film that underperforms domestically (maybe does well on home video in the US) but straight up bombs internationally (like, Power Rangers) there's not a whole lot they can do. It's going to be difficult to get international distributors to pony up lots of cash for a sequel to a movie they likely lost money on. They could try to self-fund a sequel specifically for the domestic market, but given the film's only at $80 million that would need a drastic budget reduction to the point where I doubt you could make a marketable Hollywood Power Rangers movie. People were already complaining about the lack of ranger fights in a $100 million entry. Imagine if they had to produce a sequel for $50 million. The best bet for a sequel is the movie doing extremely well in its remaining markets, which is basically just China and Japan at this point. China is a total wildcard. They haven't shown the greatest affinity to traditional American superhero films, but maybe this one will be different. I'm less optimistic about Japan. Like most of Asia, American superhero films aren't hugely popular and while this is based on a Japanese IP, it's two very large steps removed from that original material. Even if they got the entire audience who watches Sentai films annually, that wouldn't really change the movie's fate. |

The new Red is a terrible person with no leadership characteristics.
The new Pink is a teriible cyberbully who never gets punished for her actions and even seems like we're supposed to like her. The new Blue is autistic because they had to have a disabled person in the cast. The new Black is poor because they had to have a poor person in the cast. The new Yellow is a lesbian because they had to have a LBTG person in the cast. They are all terrible people with some sort of sob story and no ounce of heriosm. Who was this movie made for? |

Hadn't you watched the original show? The original Red was just leader type and nothing more The original Pink was a valley girl The original Blue was a nerd The original Black Ranger was a Black guy who likes to dance The original Yellow Ranger was Asian The original was stereotypes with little to no character or attitude, the new movie gives them character and attitude. |

It may be Hollywood accounting to blame, but from what I've looked on the International Movie Database, if we take the concept of marketing/distribution to be about equal to production costs of the movie, most movies from Hollywood in the 21st century don't actually turn a profit. Instead, the major studios rely on the few gigantic hits of the year to cover for the losses most of their other movies produce. It's the most obvious with Warner Bros., with them relying on the Harry Potter movies and Tolkien movies (and now the Lego movies, and to a lesser extent the DC movies) as their annual tentpoles.
Unless he saw it the normal way by paying for a movie ticket. |

Cheesy 90s caracatures and stereotypes is all the franchise ever had going for it, along with trying to connect all the different stock footage together into one continuity meta-plot. Once the series left the MMPR era and just became standalone, watered down versions of their sentai counterparts the series ceased to have an identity or purpose to exist when you can just watch the original. |

Time Force was basically the Japanese version, almost note for note. I disagree with the watered down, RPM and Lost Galaxy are better than their Sentai counterpart. But nowadays Power Rangers have really lost it way. {Edit: Please refrain from excessive quoting.. I edited your post for you. ~ Psycho 101} |
