Woah, when did music downloads start earning songs gold/plat/etc ratings? I thought it was all about the disc sales.

Gotcha. Apparently that wasn't the case for Japan in 2015.
Heck, just a few months ago for this article the only mention of gold certification was for an album that sold 100,000 discs.
Selling a $10-$15 dollar CD single is much more difficult than selling a $4-5 digital download. That's why I was wondering when/how this changed. I'm pretty sure the Kemono Friends song sold a ton of CD copies as well, so it's not like I'm against it being gold certified, just perplexed at the change.
