If it's a Shinkai project, then the answer is no, I don't. |

If anything, that part of Japan (northern Gifu prefecture, Hida region) is well worth going even without that film. The film publicity is certainly very welcoming. Takayama (http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5900.html), right next to the town where the film is set (http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5975.html), is well preserved Tokugawa-era city, and you will find plenty of European and Asian tourists there already. A 1 hour bus ride from Takayama is the world heritage site Shirakawa-go and the national park and hot spring region of Okuhida and Kamikochi. If you really want to go as a tourist (!), Hida is a good side trip from Nagoya or Kanazawa. spoiler[The train you see in the film (express Hida) is a real express train that runs from Nagoya to the Hida region.]
The irony is that the only movie theatre that the Hida region had was shut down a few years ago, and Toho actually made special screening in the local city hall, so the locals can enjoy the film. Japanese newspaper clip: http://www.sankei.com/photo/daily/news/161106/dly1611060014-n1.html PS: Anyway, sorry for being doing PR. I have been to Takayama twice and really loved that area Of course that was before the film even on the theatre. And I just notice the local tourist website even put information about the film setting in its website (!?) https://www.hida-kankou.jp/model/1000000603/ |

Speaking of pilgrimage, does anyone know about locales in other than Japan benefitting from Hollywood films and TV?
