I'm sure this is going to have people on both sides arguing about Piracy, but I think of it this way, this is Music - Sure its copyrighted, and thus illegal to share, but honestly how many overseas fans would actually get to listen/own the real OSTs and Albums? They are not that easy to get, and with they are not cheap at all.

Perhaps - sites like Crunchyroll could start a Japanese music streaming service?

I don't see why not.

But I'm surprised these companies are not offering legal downloads. Without the need to print CDs and offering it world-wide, surely it would be a win-win. And there is always that quirk where it's not popular in Japan, could be a massive hit in another country. So I'm surprised they have yet to do this, especially how Sony and other Music Businesses have good sales though on-line stores like though the Apple store and other websites.

My guess is that piracy makes them reluctant.

It would be good if more Japanese labels released cross-fade / sampler clips on Youtube that weren't region locked in addition to making anime music available internationally via online music stores. At present, I either use CD Japan or buy secondhand through physical stores in Japan or use a proxy service (FromJapan) who can order from other retailers or Amazon Japan resellers for out-of-print titles.

Meanwhile Youtube blames the Japanese companies for not making clips available internationally and the offending companies are deaf to overseas fans.

Lantis seems to be the best Japanese anime music label in terms of making clips available internationally on Youtube.

I suppose stories like this constitute "news," but frankly the fact that there is one of these every week makes it feel more like anti-piracy propaganda than journalism. What relevance do these stories have for the people reading ANN? Thousands of people around the world upload copyrighted materials all the time. So what if some guy in Japan is one of them?

Unfortunately, this goes back to the common understanding that Japan is horrendously slow and reluctant to make change to current business practices.

I know there are some Japanese music on the iTunes platform, however it is still incredibly niche.

Strangely, the game eroge/visual novel sector has embraced the digital revolution. Or at least compared to not too long ago, like the whole dam is about to burst. Or perhaps not too surprising, certain forms of entertainment have always been in the forefront...

PS, still have to use vpn to read/write on the forums, anyone else from Finland or thereabouts that still gets the 'maintenance' message?
