I only just found out about 4K Ultra two weeks ago when I walked into a Best Buy on a whim. I didn't even know it was a thing before then.

Interesting to see how a fundamentally "Modest" resolution product like Anime holds up under the harsh 4K "Light". I remember being able to clearly see the pancaked makeup on Sam Neill's face in the 4K version of Jurassic Park. The dinos held up better than the humans did. That "How We DId It" video should be good.

Does this mean they're going to start re-releasing all Gundam series in 4K? If so, I' glad I didn't buy them yet. I still have my DVD's. I just wish they'd have started with something else. I found Thunderbolt to be quite boring and annoying too.

I don't know if Thunderbolt was natively done in 4K, but Giant Robo preceded it as, IIRC, the first anime presented in the resolution (though as a remaster release).

Hard to think of another recent Gundam series (or anime in general) to test the 4K waters with than Thunderbolt, with how detailed and well-animated it was. Sunrise also made a couple of very conscious and wise choices in which Gundam titles to include in the test sample, as those are among the most visually impressive and prettiest works in the franchise. (And yet, F91 and G-Reco weren't included. I wonder why…  )

I knew about it, I just didn't particularly care about it or see it as a necessary upgrade. And I still don't. :I

One of the foreigners who work at sunrise (gundam origin in particular) said on his ask that gundam thunderbolt was native 4k.

Considering I wasn't planning to upgrade to a 4K HDR TV anytime soon, I grabbed Build Fighters on Blu-Ray so I could introduce my stepsisters to anime. However, with the announcement of this and gaming making a much bigger push into 4K HDR, I think I'm gonna have to pick up a new TV sooner rather than later. Thunderbolt will probably look amazing.

Gaming at over 1080p aside, I don't really think you'll be seeing anime use it past some high budget OVAs and movies. They're japanese discs too so you know they're going to be incredibly expensive. I have a 4k hdr capable tv, but I don't care enough about Thunderbolt though I am curious how good it looks.

Jeez, not sure if I'm ready to move to 4k yet. At least not for anime. I think I'll hold out on this one. Especially since I have it on Blu-ray already. This appears to be a pretty barebones release too.

Unless you have a UHD player, you'll need one if those, too. Regular blu-ray players won't play them.
