One of the amusing things about the show is that it's one of the very few shows, in any genre, that is scientifically accurate about "no sound in space." Of course, given that the bit in space occurs at the very start of the first OVA, the result can be people thinking that the sound is off, turning their speakers way up, and then being blasted when the action descends into the atmosphere.

Interesting. I've never seen this, but when you mentioned Junichi Sato directing it, that gave me more of an idea of what it's probably like, having seen a lot of his stuff. In recent years, of course, he's found a niche making gentle comedies and iyashikei anime like Tamayura and Aria, but back then he would've been directing this OVA coming off his runs on Goldfish Warning and Sailor Moon. From your description it sounds like this one is closer to his work on the latter, but also flashing some elements he'd refine more in his later work.
And Sato always has liked the "cute clumsy girl" character, whether it's Sora from Kaleido Star or Athena from Aria or Airi from Phi Brain, not to mention Usagi herself. |

Guilty as charged on this! 
One other curiosity that I forgot to mention in the review: the opener for the TV series is unusually long. OPs for series with full-length episodes nearly always clock in at 90 seconds (a standard which has been virtually unchanged for decades), but this one is a full 2 minutes. |

^One Piece's openings tend to go as long as 2 or even 2 1/2 minutes.
I have some found memories of this "a little naughty but very nice" series. Very fun, rather strangely calming. Definitely need to revisit it. |

I imagine the English dub won't be a high point on many people's lists watching this, given what the review stated. It's likely better to just say it was a product of the times, right?

I saw the Magical User Club OVA a year or two ago with the English dub and enjoyed it a lot. I never saw the TV show but the dub for the OVA was fantastic and I can't imagine watching it in Japanese. Misty Daniels, I thought, was especially good as Sae and all the other characters felt right on point. Based on the review I'm guessing the dub dips in quality for the TV show but I also don't see to a reason to watch the TV show in general since it seems weaker overall when compared to the OVA.

But is that just strictly the opener or does that time also include the standard prologue? with MUC here that time is strictly the song and accompanying visual. And I don't think the quality of the dub dips between the OVA and the TV series. The qualities I talked about are present throughout. |

Except for the very first opening (which includes the whole "there once was a pirate named Gold Roger" prologue over the music) I think yes, that run time is all song and animation. For awhile they run for about 1:50 minutes, but from around the 7th opening onward it got stretch to 2:30. |

I'm pretty surprised by the low rating for this dub. I just watched this re-release a few weeks ago and thought the dub was pretty impressive. The same cast returns for the TV series and is just as good as the OVA. |

I first read about this show in an issue of Animerica and the OVA was the first DVD anime I started with after I finished getting all the white VHS tapes of Eva. It still enjoy the OVA more than the TV series but overall its a fun show. I might be biased because of its nostalgia on me but I truly do enjoy it still to this day.
The outtakes on my original set on the OVAs are hilarious. |

This also affects the English dub since Media Blasters' release also had that in mono audio as well. |

Odd that this show's back on the radar...I recently re-watched Magic Users Club! from start to finish for the first time in a decade, and I felt it hadn't lost a bit of its charm. I'm very glad Nozomi saved this show from oblivion!

I'm getting pretty tired of the assumption by people and reviewers that because an anime is old or has a different older art style. That the appeal of that is lesser.
Haven't we been down this road a million times with other media? Besides, execution is all that matters when it comes to trope'd up anime. And as long as it's good at what it does, regardless of what has been done after. Is more important than being just old. |
